i have a stuck R and would like to rebuild it. i have heard here and there that pistons from other JD models work better than the original R pistons. i need some advice on this. if i change pistons do i need to change injectors and injector pump??? will the other model parts fit the R or is there a bunch of adapting. and where is a good place to get the parts i will need?? pistons..rings...gaskets..etc?? all the machining will be free so that"s not an issue. i would like to start looking for the parts i will need so i can finish this in my lifetime. thanks for any help you can give.

Everything I've heard you use 730 pistons & injector tips. This requires an overbore of 3/8". Yes, 375 thousandths. Oversized R pistons aren't made. This requires a special head gasket. I believe Renaissance Tractor has done some & others too. I would try to use the pumps, & whole injectors from the 730.

New Model R oversize pistons:

As you can see... they ARE available. At least in Germany...

iirc the R can be bored to stock 830 size. There was something about reaming the head's injector bores to accept the 70/720/730/80/820/830 injector bodies.
The R uses the small 10mm pump so don't use the 6 hole/ 12 thou dia late 820/830/840 tips.
