Drained the fluid out using drain on low point at the lower left side of the block. Added the new antifreeze a little at a time...2 total gallons of antifreeze with 1.5 gallons of water. Ran it a bit to mix it all up and noticed the temp gauge that has only registered a couple of needle widths from cold in normal operating to about 2 needle widths from hot. I am thinking the water has air locked. Anyone have a solution for this or an idea on how to get it full again? I hate to run it much more until I get a chance to get the air out as I do not need another rebuild........ |

| I am using extended life Prestone. I added a little water, then some antifreeze, then water, then more antifreeze until it was full, but it is short 1/2 gallon which led me to think air lock. I will drain it and premix as that is what the service manual said, but I thought it would mix OK the way I did it. It is the type lacking the water pump. Thanks for the replies. Lyle |

| Thermosiphon systems can't tolerate that. If you don't drain it back out and mix it before putting it back in you won't have to worry about a rebuild. The head or block will be busted. You need another half a gallon of water while you're at it. |

| | Just so you don't miss the point ...... Premix the water and antifreeze. Unless you live in Nome, I would use 70% water. |

| Yep you should premix the antifreeze before you install it |

| Don't worry about it. It will mix itself. Just warm it up and it will start to circulate on it's own. As long as it doesn't overheat, you're good to go. |

| If it is a thermosiphon system with no water pump it WILL NOT mix itself, the antifreeze is denser & sinks to the bottom like a slug & blocks the circulation. It WILL overheat & damage the head, head gasket, or worse. You must drain it & mix first. |

| Never had anything like that happen with decent antifreeze--- |

| I'm pretty sure the 40 is a thermo-syphon cooling system, that is no water pump. It won't mix the anti-freeze and water very well, if at all. You should have mixed it before putting it in. Were I you, I'd drain it out, catch it, mix it and reinstall it. I suspect it didn't get up to normal operating temperature because you didn't run it long enough. It takes a while and probably even some load to warm it up. I doubt that running non-mixed could have damaged anything, but not really sure about that. |
