Nathan Kapp 10-09-2012 19:55:11 174.59.239.73 Report to Moderator	So, my 59 JD 630 will shift into second okay; however, when you release the clutch, it won't move. Shifting to reverse then back will correct the problem. It only does this once in a while. I took the shift quadrant off to look at the shift forks. Their is wear on them, as you would expect - problem is, I don't know how much wear is too much wear. I've enclosed pics of the shift forks. Also, their is about 1/8 inch of play in the gear shift fulcrum and socket. Where can I get shifter parts to repair this shifter? I think this will correct some of my problem. I didn't check the detent springs yet. How difficult are these to remove and is in neccessary to do at this time? Thanks in advance for any advice. Nate [Reply]   [No Email]

machinery-man 10-11-2012 06:41:41 98.93.72.12 Report to Moderator	Re: 630 Transmission update - pics in reply to JOHN DEERE 70, 10-11-2012 05:32:43   Looks like you've got one of the major problems solved....a great shop to work in....I can see plenty of space to lay the parts out..looks like you were sold a cosmetic restoration...happens a lot...the 630's of the era were made to pay their way...JD sold the added horsepower and buyers brutually used most of them...I can say parts may be an issue but you may be lucky and not have any gear damages. Check the upper shaft for wear and the locking shifters are very important. If I were close I'd gladly look over your shoulder..take it a step at time and don't tear up parts...you'll need the right pullers, heat accetaylene....and patience....if you let the tractor run in the condition you may have gear walking and a fractured casing...I don't know if you need to go into the rear end or not....double the work...I definitely would pull the engine drive gear and put the double seal while I had the reduction gear cover off...if there is no broken shifters or lockers you could have the wear points built back up and ground down...need an experienced welder..I know those babies are top dollar...good luck keep us posted.... And yes, the shop is half the battle, especially lying on the ground changing oil - that radiant heat is wonderful. I must admit, the shop is my brother's landscape company shop, but I found some room to fit the tractor and he hasn't complained yet...haha. I will keep you all posted. This is my first tranny tear down, so it's a little over my head. Machinery-man, I like the idea of having an experienced hand help me. Their are two guys in my area that I know are good with these 2 cylinders. I am trying to get them to come take a look at the tranny up close. I also know the previous owner did some PTO work and bearing work in the tranny, so before I tear into it, I am going to see what was done, when, and by who (mainly because I want to know why in the heck they put that grease in the tranny...probably to hide something). I will let you know what we decide. The idea of tearing the belt pulley and housing off doesn't thrill me at all. Anybody close the the Lancaster PA area want to come help???? I think that tranny has been run hard with bad oil for a while. Might as well do it right. Tear it all down and replace all the bearings. Might as well split the tractor and do the differential bearings while you are at it. Will make the tranny job much easier to do too. You can also do the pto stuff. Both the pulley side housings and the flywheel and covers will require removal. While into the job you might want to also renew the seal behind the drive gear. Being a first timer you can easily get in over your head...would suggest you get counsel with someone that has done this before. Transmission tear down, replacement of worn bearing and gears, adjustment is a ton of work to the experienced hand. I can tell by the pics the ole 630 has been put through the paces. Also you'll need a heafty parts budget, by looking at the shifters you may have locker damages, I see tons of wear. You could be in for a high several hundreds of dollar budget requirement. A low hr parts tractor would be nice for the project. [Reply]  [No Email]

You can tell if the "Detents" are operational by just moving the forks back and forth.. Each Shifting Fork will find one spot (each way) that it will drop into and not want to move from..that is what the "Detents DO"... I am not so sure there are any detents on the "High/Low" fork.. Someone here should be able to give you reasonable wear limits for these parts.. Ron.. [Reply]  [No Email]
