I bought a 620 that set for years and ran poorly(bad manifold, carb ect) All the manifold bolts twisted off so I pulled the head and sent it to a shop(good shop with 2-cyc experience)He did a valve job, fixed a crack he found and redid all the manifold bolts.Put it back together along with a rebuilt carb and new wiring and the tractor runs great but it is pushing ati-freeze out radiater overflow. We ran the tractor a few hours and tried stop leak, that did not help.Tractor has set for several months and there is no anti-freeze in the crank case.Where do I start to find the problem(this is my first 2 cyclinder tracter)I used copper coat on the head gasket and installed all the new lead washers on the head bolts as instructed in I&T manual. The head gasket was aftermarket and not Deere.Head was retorqued.Tractor starts and runs perfect so where do I start to fix the problem?

I am going to check to see that I did not have it overfull and then go from there. With harvest starting it may go for awhile before I look at it.Thanks for the replies and I will post more about it when I have time to check it out.

The reservoir at the top of the radiator is for coolant expansion. If you fill it to the top it will overflow. Operators manual says that a full radiator is about 1" above the core when cool.

However, with newer equipment that has coolant recovery, full is full when cool. Collection tank usually has marks on it indicating how much fluid should be in there when cool and at operating temp.

Blown head gaskets are usually cause for "bubbles in the coolant" when engine is running.

Mark

I question that crack he fixed. Was it pressure tested after he fixed it?

I have a 620 6221964 & it will find it's own
level, I would run it longer & watch the level
just to be sure.. Last weekend I did the head
gasket on my tractor, smelling antifreeze at
cold start up & the white smoke.. Removed the
head & really everything looked pretty good.
I did find one head bolt a tad loose on the
Left Cylinder & did find the gasket didn't
look the best near that bolt. I Didn't take it
to a machine shop & have it checked?
Reassembled engine after clean up, white lead
on all the head bolts that came out instead
of the Nut only. Copper coated the gasket. New
lead washers, refilled & started it up. It ran
for about 25 minute & pushed antifrees out the
over flow till it's down about 3 to 4" from the
top. ( However ) Last night my plan was to
retorq the head But I needed to move the tracot
a few feet befor I did this task, & when I
started it I smelled antifreese & seen white
smoke???? It did not Miss, shut it back down &
removed the plugs, cranked it over, seen NO
antifreeze at the plug holes. S I screw the
plugs back in & ran it for 15 minutes, took the
plugs back out & left it sit. Thismoring I
cranked the engine over with the plugs removed
& Seen NO antifreeze.. I will take the bore
scope home look closer. The tractor Has
bailed well over 10,000 bales this summer & I
haven't ever seen it get HOT, nothing much over
210°. Thats where it has always ran for the
past 15 years of me owning it when working. This
is the 1st time I've done anything to the
engine & Maybe I should have the head sent
out magna fluxed & checked for trueness. All I
know it it was over hauled in 1982 with a New
std. Block & Pistons, Valves at a Deere Dealer
in NW Pa. It carries 130 pounds compression
I saw no sense it doing the valves. Needless to
say I'm alittle upset at this time, but I still
havent retorqed it to 150 pounds.....

is it possible that its not compression pushing out the antifreeze? could it be that the radiator was too full and its just finding its level. My 60 will push out antifrezze for a while until iys just slightly over the core and then it doent go any lower. Bill

If you are sure that compression is getting into the coolant, it has to be the head, the head gasket or the cylinder block. Unfortunately, I"m not sure there is any test you can run with the engine assembled that can determine which of the three it is. It may be that you have to tear it back down and do an ever so careful inspection of all pieces. If you can"t find anything with the head or gasket, you may have to pull the cylinder assembly to look for cracks covered up by the pistons. Are you sure the head was properly repaired? Best of luck!
