jmattson 09-11-2012 20:33:44 100.42.82.83 Report to Moderator	I recently bought two John Deere B tractors one is a 1952 and the other being a 1948. When I got the 1948 home I drained the oil and water came out with it. I then drained what was left of the antifreeze. I let it all drain out and filled it back up with diesel. I let it soak for 3 days before draining it and putting fresh oil in it. I then drained the trans and rear end oil. Once again oil and water came out. I filled it back up with diesel and it has been soaking for 2 weeks. I hooked up a battery to it and wanted to see if it would turn over. When I push the starter it makes a humming sound but wont pop. I then opened the cocks and with the transmission in neutral it will turn over and pop when rolling it back and forth by hand. (When I hit the starter it still just buzzed.) When I put it in gear it will not budge with the starter or by hand. Even jerking it the pulley will not turn. I am not sure what to do next so thought I would ask for your help. I read somewhere that if the starter is stuck this might be what would happen. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance. If NOT..it may be stuck in TWO Gears at once.. Not uncommon, if the shifter Detents and springs are weak of broken.. The engine will still turn over, with the Clutch Dis-Engaged, though.. Here is the run down. It rolls in neutral both ways with the clutch engaged or disengaged. The motor will turn over with the clutch disengaged in gear. Even took the spark plugs out to make sure it didnt spit anything out and nothing. It will not turn over while in gear with the clutch engaged. Doesnt even budge. Does this lead you to believe it is stuck in between two gears or is the starter stuck?? Cant wait to get her going again and thanks for your help!! Thanks!   [Reply]  [No Email]

Has the Clutch been apart lately..? Could it have been installed incorrectly..? You say the engine turns over fine with the Clutch dis-engaged while in gear, but the tractor will not budge... Sounds like it IS slipping into TWO (2) Gears at once... You may need to remove the Steering pedestal/Gear shifter assembly and look to see what is going on... You can jack one rear wheel off the ground and see for sure when the transmission "Locks-up" without needing to actually move the tractor.. Clyde..   [Reply]  [No Email]

But..if there is a broken gear or the transmission is in 2 gears at once, the tractor is NOT going to move unless you Break something.. Since the tractor will roll by hand, you know the Brakes released, so the problem is IN the transmission.. Clyde..   [Reply]  [No Email]

When the clutch is engaged the tractor wont budge. Sorry for not making myself clear. I will try jacking one side of it up and looking deeper into it. Just sounds like your starter is shot, maybe stuck out against the fly wheel maybe not. I"d drop the starter. Is it a mag tractor or distrubuter? If it"s a mag drop the starter and pull it to see what you have. the water you drained is prolly just condensation...those big castings sweat alot.   [Reply]  [No Email]
