Was mowing hay in the horse paddock yesterday with a disk mower on my 83 JD 4450 and noticed the water temp creeping up to the hatched procautionary area below the red zone. This tractor has never used a drop of oil and always runs in the middle range on the water temp. Stopped mowing and checked for leaks and could hear the overflow steaming. After letting it cool down I checked the water level and it was about 3 gallons low on water. The oil level was up and it had a chalky look to it rather than the normal oil dark green/black look. I"m sure I have some kind of head gasket, cracked something etc so it will be expensive. Just got out of dealership last week for a new A/C compressor, seals, etc ($994.00). Anyone got any ideas on what is the most likely scenario of the problem or what I could check to identify the issue. Had to get my dependable JD 3020 out of the shed and started baling. |

That is a gear driven water pump.

If it put the water in the crankcase, and it probably did, and you ran it under load and at operating temp for any length of time in the field with a coolant/oil mix in the crankcase, drop the pan and check a couple of main bearings - don't take the rods loose because rod bolts are torque-to-yield and good for only one use. It's always a good idea to check bearings one of of these deals, because coolant-contaminated oil forms acides that will take the babbit right off the bearing shells in a few hours of running time. If it got ran long at all with coolant in the oil, the bearings will be affected. I just underhauled a 9300 that was ran only a few hours with coolant in the oil and the bearings were showing a lot of copper. The crank was okay, which is usally the case if you catch them quick enough.

I couldn't remember if the gear driven water pump began on the 50 or 55 series, but is also a possible and more likely cause.

Great responses...I told my wife what you guys had posted and she laughed and said we never could get that lucky with only a water pump issue. However, that makes sense as the water pump would occasionally make a squeaking sound when first started. Maybe the bearing is shot and water is leaking past the bearing. I'll hope for the best and will post the final solution when I get back from a 15 day trip. I posted just in case someone had a similar experience or had workshop experience. It was about 98 degrees today but it was kind of fun on the old 3020 bailing hay without a cab and A/C but you get to hear things you don't with a cab. Baled over a 1000 bales of bermuda without missing a bale (New Holland BC-1060) but now I got to put them in the barn. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Was there last summer with the 4050. Only problem was a worn water pump and mud daubers that had filled the pump's weep vent.

We like to roll up some brass screen and shove it in the weep hole so the mud daubers can't plug the hole. Coolant will still get past the screen when the seal and bearings go bad and help pevent coolant in the oil.

Common problem waterpump kit is around $280 plus a couple hours labor and problem should be solved. Just tryed to buy a 4250 with same problem.Dont run and get it fixed or the price will increase dramatically

My son"s 4450 just had the same problem. Turned out the water pump was shot and leaking into the engine oil. His tractor was due for an overhaul so he went ahead and did an in frame. If you don"t need to overhaul, change the pump and flush the crankcase.

| Cylinder liners or water pump is leaking into crankcase.I''l bet water pump if you've changed anti-freeze very regularly. Water pump drives from timing gears.

Was it foamy looking? if it is just discolored i would say your leak is in the engine oil cooler, or a sleeve o ring that has gone bad. But foamy, indicating pressure bubbling the oil and coolant together would be a sure indication of a head gasket (more likely) of a cracked sleeve. The oil cooler isn't a terrible hard fix, the cover for it is under the intake manifold.
