Thought I'd pass this along to a fellow Deere mechanic. If you ever work on a 6105/6125/6135 that has had serious timing gear train issues, look at the front of the cylinder head closely. Just got a 9300 engine back together that had shelled out the water pump and the bearing balls went through the timing gears. Shelled the gears but it stayed in time. I replaced all the gears, put in rods and mains, etc and got it fired back up yesterday only to discover an oil leak at the front of the engine from the valve cover area. Pulled the cover and found that the top front of the head is cracked through above the front cam bore. Apparently when the shrapnel was going through the gears it wedged up on the camshaft hard enough to split the cam bore. Not good. Now I get to take a bunch of what I put together back apart to pull the head.

Ouch,, I'll keep that in mind,It sure aggravates me to have to go back into one,,and "knock on wood" I haven't had to for a long time.... When some thing as hard as a ball bearing goes through a gear set it puts a strain on things,,I have seen transmission cases get crack that way...

Yes it does. Doesn't sound the machine shop is too confident it an be fixed. I think a new head is most of $8000. I haven't had to go back into too much over the years, knocking on wood like you, but I did have to go into a 7630 tranny twice awhile back. Did the new front plate gaskets and cover update DTAC said was probably the reason the forward clutch was leaking and defaulting to neutral. Got it back together and it was better but still not right. Went back in and found that the front housing pump surface was roached and the piston seals on the forward clutch were shredded. Not a fun job splitting that thing - the rear wheels have to come completely off, and that 7000 splitting stand setup is a joke. Got a 7810 powershift apart right now. I'm not a 7000 fan, lol.
