It is kind of funny when you think about it, we complain that a part breaks down after ONLY 40 years or so of use. If only we could get that kind of performance out of our new cars.

Yes, no one had any idea those old Gals would run this long. Town friends will stop in here from time to tome and see a shiny 4020 setting here in the shop ans say "Why is a tractor that new being worked on" when I tell them it"s 45 years old they can"t believe it,,their 4 year old cars are in the shop a couple times a year...

The return fitting at the injector pump is probably clogged, remove the fitting make sure it's the one that actually screws into the pump body, then start the tractor and see if it stays running, it will slobber a little fuel but not much.

Why is this such a problem ? Is that fitting to small or what ? Iv'e never worked on one before. What on new tractors keeps this from happening?

It"s only a problem on that style pump, it"s caused primarily from time, the shaft coupling inside is made of a material that breaks down over time and chips into tiny black particals that float around in the return circuit, trying to get back to the fuel tank, the only way out is past that check valve, and they get lodged in there plugging it up. When the check valve gets plugged low pressure builds in that area and causes the engine to idle down and stop, some times they will run for a few minutes and stop, some times they will stop right away. Removing the check valve don"t fix the problem,it just lets you have a little time to get the job at hand done and then rebuild the pump. The newer replacement coupling, last a lot longer, and the new style pumps don"t use this kind of coupling. You need to remember, some of these old pumps are 40 years old or so...

Took all the return lines off they are all clear, with the line off the pump it runs great, hook it back up it dies. Time to rebuild pump?
