Why does my generator only charge after I jump the Field terminal to the ground? After time, the generator will quit charging and I have to jump the field to ground again. I polarized the generator and that didnt make any difference. |

| | If a genny charges okay with its FLD post grounded but NOT OTHERWISE, the problems could be the VR isnt well grounded (try a ground jumper to VR),,,,,,,,,,,OR the VR is going bad (Field curent control relay and/or its contacts are burned/carboned),,,,,,,,,,,,,OR the VR is out of adjustment,,,,,,,,OR the wires bad from FLD on genny to FLD on VR,,,,,,,,,,OR theres a bad connection!!!! It may help of the VR relay contacts are lightly cleaned/buffed/polished but once burned n carboned they can stick again or develop a resistive connection If the genny stops charging over time even with FLD always grounded, the genny may have problems like worn brushes or a commutator problem or brush hold down problem of the fields may be going bad. It wouldnt hurt to also insure the genny itslef has a good ground and that the belt is good n tight and not all worn n glazed and begins to slip. If the genny has a good ground and if the FLD is dead grounded, the VR is mostly by passed so if it dont charge then its more a genny then a VR problem. You might also by pass the cutout relay ONLY WHILE RUNNING by externally with a jumper wire temporarily conencting BAT to GEN/ARM n see if it continues to charge then in case the relays contacts are burned and carboned Run my Troubleshooting procedure John T |
