Heading into the homestretch of a 4020 restoration. Ready to pick out rear tires. Plan on going with 38's. Also leaning towards radials. Has anyone had good or bad expierences with any brands? Are some of thes "side line" brands ok or should I guy stick with Firestone, Michilen, Goodyear, etc?? Any feedback would be appreciated. |

| I run 18.4 34 Alliance on mine. I got them new a year ago and filled them with the sugar water instead of calcium. I am pretty happy with the sugar water, heavier per pound and not corrosive if you get a leak. Dad has Firestones on his 4020, the discontinued 23 deg bar ones. I wanted a set of them (can't recall the exact name of them) but they weren't available any longer. The Alliance cost me a lot less than other firestones at that time/place at least. |

| We had a 4020 with what I think was a factory cab, and it came with duals on 38 inch rims. My dad wanted to go with singles, so he bought 18.4-38's and had them mounted--guess what, they wouldn't clear the factory cab fenders. He ended up going with 18.4-34's and was very happy with it. It did sort of "lay down" in the back tho'! |

| Back when I sold 4020's new a lot of them were ordered with 18.4X38 tires but we sold to some farmers that farmed in sand and they needed all the traction they could get. |

| I think that it is hard to beat a set of Firestones and on a 4020 with the regular fenders 16.9x38 look great and will increase road speed.18.4X38s leave little clearance between fenders unless it has a factory cab. They were an option in 71/72 and they show up on some. They look better with the large 4320 fenders that was also available in 71/72.Unless it is a HFWD 11x16 fronts match well w/38s |

| What size wheels/rims do you have? I agree with the statement that new 18.4x38 radials seems like overkill. My 4020 has 18.4x34 and they are tire enough for it. It has duals on it all the time. I use fourth gear on the power shift trans. 38 inch tires might be enough faster that I would run out if power. It doesn't have any too much now. When I replace them I think I'll go with Firestone bias. I just put two pairs of American Farmer tires on tractors- 18.4x38 bias, and 14.9x28 bias. I am not impressed. |

| I should say it is going to be used for some haying, maybe some tillage and/or planting. It won't get allot of hours per year. |

| | 18.4-38 is a popular tire size, could a matched pair of name brand used bias ply tires on rims with 40-60% tread do the job just as well at 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of new? New 18.4-38 radials seems like some over kill on a 4020 that will not get used for much tillage. Those new tires should last at least 6000+ hours unless you run on roads a lot. They will most likely deteriorate from old age than get worn out on that tractor. |
