How reliable is the hydraulic FWA on the 4020 tractors. I am looking to buy one ,restored, and would like to know if leakage or breakdowns are common.Of course I assume if one is taken well cared for, maybe no problems. Thanks for any responses. |

| '71 & '72 4020's are generally worth more money(all other things equal) than earlier models. |

| Buyers of these didn't understand they were Front Wheel ASSIST. They were really only for getting through the occasional tough areas in a field with same sized equipment as you'd have on a 2wd tractor. You couldn't expect to pull another bottom or 6 more feet to disk, but owners tried to use them like Four Wheel DRIVE. They would cook the hydraulic oil.
On a combine or chopper, they were fine. They were used for many years after they were dropped from the tractors.
In the end, they were a bad idea that stuck around too long (through the 40 series).
If you want a collector to occasionally use with appropriately sized equipment, you shouldn't have any trouble with the Hydro FWA |

| I had one on a 4630 and there was nothing wrong with the drive itself. The only problem was the hydraulic system was not adequate to power the wheel motors. I also had the very same unit on the rear drive of a 860 Massey Combine and it worked great. Never had any leaks or problems with any of the components. |

| Your right there Tom, the hydraulic system just wouldn't support the needs of the front end...we sold 2 4430's and 1 4630 new back in the 70's,,no one was happy with them.... |

| Not one of JDs best ideas. They are very collectable and sell well.A friend of mine who is one of the best mechanics I know puts them on power-shift tractors for collectors I think the hydraulic rear drive off certain choppers is identical. They do everything you mention.3020s are really cute with them and rare.No one knows exact number made. |
