I have an opportunity to buy a old 5020 with the 318 v8 diesel in it. Has 3 pt and pto. has cab. tractor is pretty rough and been setting awhile. prolly 10-15 years but the guy told me they pull started it a few years ago and it ran good. He said i could buy it for $6000. what you guys think? not sure if its a orginal kinze powered 5020 or not.

Also there is a pictures of a nice 5020 on here thats restored and has huge tires. Anybody know what tire size is on it? or any other information about it? thanks

Tractor is located in central Iowa. i took another look at the tractor today. Really it dont look as rough as i first thought. the cab just makes it look really bad. I still dont know if its an original kinze deal or not.

Cummins puller, i trust the guy as to take his word that it runs. but either way i plan to go try go pull start it an jus drive it home cause he is only two miles away. the guy grew up with my grandpa an im pretty sure thats the only reason he will sell it to me cause he has had prolly a 100 people wanna buy it over the years. hood an fenders look useable an good. has cab on it but i would remove it. me an my dad are going to take another look at it tomorrow. The first time i looked at it i didnt look at it that close cause i never dreamed he would sell it.

Might put it in a couple small tractor pulls an take it to quite a few shows. thanks for input so far guys

Id say half that is twice its value. If you ever ran a good one, you wouldnt want to again. Then with a screamin slob in it its worse yet.

I ran one for a farmer back in the early 70's pulled a field cultavator in fifth gear was loud even though it had 2 large mufflers and stacks on it. would love to find it again. The farmer put it together himself but did an excelent job and used it for 10 yrs or better then bought a case 4 wheel drive to replace it and was really sorry he had more trouble with it then he ever thought about having with the 5020. He was from central OH.

Josh,They are a great collector [IF] its a Kinze repower. They put the 8v71 in some before the 4WD cummings conversion. You should be able to tell by the workmanship as Mr.Kinze is the best.Heritage Iron magazine has ran some features on muscle tractors and a 5020 has been featured. The Titan tire deal is great incentive and I saw a large MFD Oliver with dual 24.5x32 and large fronts[several thousand worth of tires] They are very noisy and seem to leak oil but pull the trottle and hang on.I know of a restored one that the seller will not take 25K for.

Im going to go look at this tractor again and take a closer look. Ive always thought these tractors would be one of the coolest to have.

On the tire deal, ive seen ones that look like the rear tires are off a big floater. Not sure on size and what to do about rims for it. take a look at this picture here. http://www.tractorshed.com/contents/tpic6960.htm

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

I'll sell you one that is ready to go with original power, and it is a row crop 5020 and not a standard. It has almost new duals on the back, and almost new fronts. Not Chinese junk either. Has the original three point as well.

Cheap at $10,000.00 only problem is it's in SC

Contact a few salvage yards and ask what they would pay you for it, non-running. Don't offer any more than that much. You will then only be out your time and hauling costs if it is not salvagable.

A machine that big & powerful should still have been useful, it was probably left parked that long for a very good reason. Assume the worst for your own protection.

I could be a long, expensive and fun project, but could take an additional $10,000, $15,000 or more to fix it up.

Sounds a little rich to me. I bought one back in 89 for $6700. It ran and I used it for ten years.

If i got the tractor i would be restoring it as an FFA project. Im 20 right now and have one more year in FFA. i can receive free tires for any tractor i restore thanks to Titan tire. The tractor would just be used for parades and shows and maybe a tractor pull. Its kind of my dream tractor because i love v8's and love john deere. If its and original kinze tractor, wouldnt that make it worth a little more?

What do you think about the tractor? Are you going to enter it to try and win the national contest? What kind of shape is the sheet metal in? what sheet metal is missing? If they pull started it a few years ago ask them to do it again so you can hear it run before you buy it. Chances are they won't do this as most folks won't that I have seen. $6000 sounds high to me. Without knowing the real condition of the motor and transmission I couldn't make myself give that. But then again I don't care as much for V8's either as you do. This is just my opinion. If I were in your shoes I would want to buy it as a parts tractors since it has been setting up for that many years. As a parts tractor without any pictures of it, I'll say $2500-3,000 for it. If you can find out that it is an original Kinze conversion, I'd guess $5 at most. This is just my opinion. I'm sure others will give theres. I bought a 4520 and did the same type project when I was in college. You can spend a chunck of money on bigger tractors before you know it.(I know) Good luck with it either way. If you do get it post some pictures of it.

From a collector stand point it may be kind of cool to have. If I were going to have one with anything other than a factory 531 engine. I would put a 619 in it. Like I said it would be kind of cool from a collectors stand point but its still a detroit. If you are going to use it I'd say look for another 5020. Just my 2 cents worth.

Looks like 24.5 x32's on the rear and 16.5 x 16.1's on the front

Aside from the condition of this particular tractor the combination worked well. Dad knew a farmer over in the next county that had a 5020 like that for many years. The John Deere components held up very well to the additional power and this farmer liked using it to pull the forage harvester and wagon. As an everyday tractor its fuel economy is not what newer tractors from the 1990's and such have.

It ought to be illegal to ruin a good 5020 with a POS dribbletroit. Stay as far away from that junk engine as you can.

I agree with you jdeere 70. Melt the engine down and send it to China with the rest of GM. If he wants a Deere, find a real Deere.
