Has anyone ever converted a pony motor to run off a 12 volt system? I have a 720D that I would like to change the 6v coils to 12v coils. Also if possible, can you get electronic ignition so you can eliminate the points? Any information would be helpful.

If you used two 6 volt batteries in series (12 volt), use power from one battery to power the pony ignition would make the conversion very simple.

Our friend the Frankster aka FIT may know otherwise, but Im unaware of any after market "12 volt" coils for that Wico distributor. Similar, Im unaware of any elec switch applications to fit that distributor. In addition theres already a small factory ballast whose resistance and power rating may need modified (or just not used, see below)

I.E. Its NOT any easy off the shelf modification that Im aware of

That being said, of course it can be done electronically (using the stock coils), you would have to compute the proper ohms value and power rating of a ballast resistor to add in series from the Ignition switch to the input stud on the Wico. It would have to be around the size of the resistance looking into the Wico so theres something like a 60/40 voltage divider and the ballast drops 6 volts leaving 6 (actually more like 4.5 due to the factory ballast which I wouldnt use any longer) to the Wico. ALSO theres some duty cycle and point closure dwell times and overlaps (2 sets of points) to look at when computing the ohms value of the needed ballast.. I could do it (compute ballast size) but Id have to take some voltage and current measurements first....

YA KNOW WHAT it may be easier to just buy and use a sufficient power rated solid state 12/13 volt DC down to 4.5 to 6 volt DC Voltage Regulator and let it serve the Wico distributor!!!!!!!!!

Of course, you would need to convert the genny and voltage regulator over to 12 volts and change light bulbs and possibly ballast some of the gauges (or feed off new solid state 6 volt voltage regulator) so they work at 12 volts??

Another thing is some of those starter motors spin the pony pretty fast already, there could be some issues with that if 12 volts is used on the 6 volt starter.

Im NOT saying this cant be done, its pretty straight forward DC electricity buttttttttttt its not a decision Id take lightly since its so non standard. Any decent maintained electricial system can start the pony with those 6 volt systems and other then brighter lights perhaps Im unsure if any advantage of 12 over 6 volts is worth the time and expense BUT ITS YOUR TRACTOR AND YOUR CHOICE SO GO FOR IT IF THAT FLOATS YOUR BOAT..........

Id like to hear FIT's thoughts on this????

I only have a minute because I'm finishing a flooring project.

I don't know of any 12 volt coils for the Wico, nor any electronic ignition kit. I have experimented with a couple LM309K solid state voltage regulators using a separate battery, and th epony ran fine.and with 12 volts in (neg ground) and a pure 5 volts output (TTL logic controller regulators, so 5 vdc) that is how I would go. Not sure if those LM309's can be run pos. ground, maybe on ann isolated board?

Unless you need a 12 vdc system for lighting or accessories, it's pretty much NWTT...not worth the trouble. A 12 volt generator to the split 6 volt batteries is a decent idea, but if you're only after getting the pony to start and run better, that's not going to happen as those coils of today prefer up to straight 6 volts using no resistor, but no more.

I would suggest adding the coil protection circuit if you don't have it already. It has saved me several sets of coils over the past ten years!

You can do anything but all your conversions are more time and $$$ than what a factory system .
And provides no added benefit.
F.I.T. and Clooney perfected the coil protection circuit which is the only mod required.
