I have a John Deere M that I modified to have a 3 pt hitch. I use the tractor to roto till around the yard (4ft. tiller) but the tractor has a hard time . The model 40 and 320 both have the same displacement ,stroke and bore as the M but produce 5 hp more. Can I upgrade my M? |

| Look at the rated HP on the 40 and 320 pay attention to the RPMs the horsepower was measured at, compare that to your M. Don't be surprised if the newer tractors turn more RPMs, so to get the "extra" power from your M all that might be required is to turn up the governor and allow it to run faster, but since you're engine is running faster so is your tractor so unless you're currently tilling in 2nd gear you won't gain anything. If your tilling in 2nd gear go to 1st. If you're in first already going faster is not going to help, might gain more by putting smaller tires on it and running a slower ground speed. |

| You will need to change the governor weights. This will increase the RPM's to give you a few extra ponys. The only difference between the engine in a 40 and an M are the governor weights. |

| Others will know more, but I can share the basics. It is not a big deal to get more power out of most of these engines. The issue becomes if the rest of the drivetrain can handle what you are putting to it. I have seen guys perk up the HP in tractors, only to suffer premature tranny or other failures. |
