I'm running a 7' Hardee rotary brush cutter on my 1972 4020. When fully raised, the top rear of the deck is within 1/4" or so of the rear tires. Sitting still it just barely clears, but when moving it sways some side to side and actually rubs. I have the anti-sway blocks installed between the lower links. The tires are 18.8x34, practically new. Just wondering what adjustments I can make to keep the deck from hitting the back tires when its fully raised. Or if there is some way to limit the high point of travel. I don't particularly need to ride around with it jacked up that high anyway, but when I pull back on the lever to raise the bush hog, it would be nice to not have to turn around and watch to make sure its not going to hit the tires. Thanks for your time, I learn a lot on here. |

| After market quick hitches are around $200 would give you 2-4 in.The side console tractors have an adjustable stop for depth. You could easily have a rubber stop for height.JD actually has some strips for keeping levers engaged if you dont have power beyond. The earlier [61/68]dash 3 pt control lever also had a depth stop.Several aftermarket companys such as BushHog etc.dont always fit right with different brands. |

Where is the L/D control lever(parts key #44) setting? If set in "D" or minimum then rock shaft should start raising long before the end of travel of the RS control lever. If set in "D"(min.) then yes the L/D mechanism needs adjustment as outlined in a JD service manual. |

| Got the same problem with my 4020 and flail mower. Can you weld new brackets to extend the existing on the mower to gain a couple inches? |

I would love to have the quick attachments on the 3-pt, but can't really afford it at the moment. The tires are definitely 18.8x34. I shortened the top link as much as I could, and it did help some. It definitely changed the way it picks up, with the tail end now picking up before the front. I may play with it some more, but at the shortest setting and fully raised it appears to be about 3/4" off the tire. Still uncomfortably close, though.
I like the idea of the stop on the console lever, but almost all the raising action takes place at almost the end of the travel of the lever. I guess it needs some adjusting. I may look into lengthening the lift arms soon as well.
Thanks for the replies! If you have any other thoughts, I'll be watching. |

| I had the exact same problem with an MX10 John Deere mower on all three of my available tractors - 4010 and 4020 with 16.9-38 tires and 4430 with 18.4-38 tires. Toplink is not an issue because the mower is semi-mount (only mounts to lower arms) The only way I could use the mower on any of these tractors was with a quick hitch. Dunno why, but the arms are just too short. The quick coupler gets the mower out 3 or 4 inches and solves the problem. |

| Another idea would be to use a quickhitch or what I use, a Pat's quick hitch that I got from Agrisupply. It will extend the bushhog out about 2 inch's on the end links and makes hooking things up alot easier when NO help is around. |

| If shortening center link doesn't help.
You could use one of these(parts key #12 R54533 STOP) although it's called a selective control stop but I think it will work. IIRC the slots are very similar in width.
Or lengthen these lift arms |

| I am pretty sure that is the size (18.8x34) printed on the sidewall, but I am going to double check to be sure.
I'll also try adjusting that top link. If my memory is right, I think the front of the deck does raise up before the rear. But I also have the wheel set fairly high so its hard to say. I am going to look hard at that top link. |

| My guess is your top link is too short or if the cutter has a chain on the top link it is too long. It sounds as though the front of the cutter is raising before the rear does. You want them both to come up at the same time or the rear to come up slightly quicker than the front. Mike |

| I misspoke in my first post. It sounds as though your top link is too LONG. Sorry for the mistake. Mike |
