I bought an aftermarket 3 position headlight switch the other day from Tractor Supply, but not sure how to hook it up to a 1950 B with headlights and rear light. It's 30 amp with a 15 amp fuse.

Thanks for your help.

James,

I don't think that that is that type of switch. I hope I'm wrong, but I think that switch is meant to use with a cut out and not a voltage regulator. On those, the fused end is the OUTPUT to the lights, not input. You only get lights when it is all the way out. The original late "B" switch would have only been a SPST, just to turn on the lights, all three of them. Some of the later add-on rear lights had a toggle switch on the rease lamp case that turned it from white to red.

This switch will ground the generator field at position 2 and 3. Once he gets the pin out information, I'm thinking it can be rigged to fire the front lights at #2, and add the rear light at #3.

Frank, If that was the switch to use with a cutout relay wouldn't it have a resistor on it that comes into play on low charge rate.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Most I've seen the resistor is not integral. It's an extra just attached.

I think that 3 position switch is meant for a generator with a cut out. First position is off, middle is full field ground the generator, aned the outer most position is lights and full field ground. The fuse is there for generator protection.

On your "B", you just need an on and off switch, unless you want to operate the rear lamp separately, but all three lights came on with one switch.

You can make the three way do this, but you'll have to trace out the terminals. First position would fire the front lights and the outer position would add in the rear.

I think I am going to make a wiring block for a magnetic orange emergency light I put on when plowing snow, and would like to have the rear light switched separately from the fronts (pulling hayrides in the evening the light can be annoying). By looking at the picture, can you tell which would be my the hot wire in, and which are my outs?

The black wire that comes from the "L" terminal on the voltage regulator should be connected to the light switch.

Here's a photo of the black wire from the "L" terminal on our 52A.

Photobucket

Looking at your photo above, the terminal at the end of the fuse on the light switch is the input and the terminals on each side are the outputs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll use a homemade tester and see.

I keep a light bulb and a little Radio Shack buzzer in my electrical test box, and use that to figure out mystery switches like that. I'd just be guesssing.
