I am wondering, on the main John Deere decal on the hood, where does it go? I've seen some centered on the hood, and some closer to the front of the hood... this is my first tractor that I've restored, and I have no idea.

This is on a 1954 JD 70 Gas, Row-Crop Tractor.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

The 1950 does not have a pressurized coolant system, so that decal is not needed. Even with a water pump.

The be careful PTO decal I have seen, at different places on the tractor. There is a PTO warning that is a plate mounted on the battery box, on the backside. There is also a call out for the sticker to go on the PTO shield, and I have also seen one low on the pedestal holding the steering wheel, throttle and head lights.

The every 10 hr decal goes on the oil cup, that is mounted on the oil bath air cleaner via a thumb screw clamp. On the cup will be embossed a oil level line. The decal goes under that centered on the cup in both directions.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

They didn't supply those with the last set I bought. Can you post a photo of it?

Can you still see the original patent decals on the frame? Absence of patent decals is a dead giveaway of a repaint since they were never supplied in any decal set.

Where on the frame would they appear and I'll take a look?

Actually I think I can see one in the last photo...left side frame rail below the spark plug area.

Take a look at the decals on "15" one of our early 1953 Model 70s.

I have seen no evidence/indication that this tractor has ever been repainted or that the decals have ever been replaced.

Each individual letter in the decal is separate and apart from the other letters.

Photobucket

On the pulley side the decal is 4 inches from the seem of the hood and nose.

Photobucket

One the flywheel side the decal is 41/2 inches from the seem of the hood and nose.

Photobucket

Here are a couple of photos of the number 70.

Each number in the decal is separate and apart from the other number.

The number 70 on the pulley side is 3 inches from the bottom of the number 7 to the bottom of the nose and 1 inch from the right edge of the 0 to the grill screen.

Photobucket

The number 70 on the flywheel side is 3 inches from the bottom of the number 7 to the bottom of the nose and 1 inch from the bottom of the number 7 to the grill screen.

Hope this helps.

Matt, I imagine the placement varied somewhat on original tractors but of those originals that I have the lettering starts about 4 inches behind the seam between the grille and the hood on all of them. That measurement looks about right from pictures and other tractors I've seen. Mike

Also, where does the "70" decal go on the tractor, and what degree turn is it at?

Thanks again,

Matt

Someone with a gas '70' will pop in with the measurements on the hood. The diesel was skewed a bit to allow for the "Diesel" decal.

The '70' tilts at 28 degrees.
