Hello all, I had a problem with the PTO on my 3010 tractor a few weeks ago when I was cutting hay. The tractor's PTO shaft would not turn when the tractor was under load and made a winding noise in the rear end. I shimmed the shifter rod behind the PTO stub shaft and had real good luck with it until a couple days ago when the PTO quit working altogether and quit making the chatter it did before I shimmed the shifter rod. I can get the PTO to turn but it will not turn under load and no longer makes noise. I am guessing the shift pin inside is now broken and am going to replace it. Just wondering what the best plan of attack to fix the tractor is? Can I split the rear of the tractor to put the shift pin in or is it a much more serious job? Thanks for any help or insight.

At least we both agree that more than likely 1000 rpm on a small hp tractor is unnecessary. I can't envision the "T" shaped piece you made. I suppose you don't have a photo such as you have of your other excellent craftsmanship???

No, I don't have a pic of one,,but the way it works is the lower part of the "T" fits into the shaft slot , then the upper part of the "T" goes against the 540 gear, then a shift collar slips up to the T and captures the lower part of the T,,this keeps it in place, ,,then the snap ring goes against the collar, sorta like your bolts, but nothing can come loose, it's nice and clean..

What I did to eliminate the 1000 rpm option and tiny pins was to remove 1000 rpm drive gear(parts key #33) and all shift rod components from inside the pto drive shaft.Install the largest bolts with locking nuts that will fit in pto shaft slots to hold with the aid of shims the 540 rpm drive gear in the correct(original) location on the pto drive shaft. I forgot one needs to re-install screw(parts key #40B) and put an expansion plug in the stub shaft end where the o-ring(parts key #14) was sealing the oil from leaking. I altered several 3010/4010 pto in this fashion and had no comebacks with this alteration. Unless I planned on needing 1000 rpm on an 55 pto hp tractor that's how I'd repair it for ever.

The way I lock them into 540 is by making a "T" shaped piece out or 3/16" metal and slip it into place with the forward snap ring holding it in place. Years ago we cut a new snap ring groove in the shaft to hold the 540 gear in place,,but a few of the broke right where we cut the groove so I use the metal "T" ever since..

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. I got busy today and split the tractor. I still dont exactly see how to fix my problem. The pin on the front part of the shaft was perfect and in tact when I took everything apart; is there another pin in there somewhere or am I looking at the wrong area of the tractor? Thanks again for everybodies input.

TxJim, can you elaborate on the 540 only modification? I have a 3010 that isn't running yet but I want to take care of this before it starts getting used.

A poster a little while back was stating it could be done. I asked how one inserts and spreads the teenincy(sp) cotter pin in the tiny shift. They stated no problem, yea right. Plus I think the springs(parts key #35) inside the the pto shaft would have to have their tension relaxed to ever get the pins through the holes in the drive gears.

I can't remember would removing 540 stub shaft & screw(parts key #40B) in the center of mid-pto shaft release the spring tension?

Yes removing the stub shaft and front cap screw would take the spring tension off but you would still need to wiggle things back and forth to get the pin right,,big thing would be drilling the hole in the right place,,next one I have apart I will do some "speculating" about it,,I'm all for a good short cut...

If it were my 3010 I alter the pto to a strictly 540 rpm and eliminate the tiny shift.pin problem. I supervised this task on several 3010/4010 way back when I was a JD dealer service manager.. To repair broken pins tractor must be split between clutch & trans housings. Someone a few days ago was talking about drilling a hole in the side of trans case and replacing pins through the hole. Then thread and plug the hole. I think that would be a little tricky.

I have replaced the pin that way a couple times. You have to remove the shift rod so the pin will go through the shaft. I use a long needle nose like a surgical tool. It is tedious but way faster than splitting the tractor. In both cases the hole was drilled previously so I did not have to locate where to drill. I'm thinking there was a service bulletin but I don't have access to them anymore to look.

That would be "way" tricky...if not near impossible,,but a good thought..
