I put one on my john deere 50. You can buy it at advanced auto parts for around 50 dollars. When i hooked mine up to my tractor i ran the wire from the battery on one side and the wire from the alternator on the other side and it works great. I you would like i can try to upload a picture of it

Go 3 wire. As stated the one wire requires a certain RPM to start charging. You can put a smaller pully on it to make it spin faster at idle.

That is the wiring for the 3 Wire.......you must use a diode or light bulb on the one circuit or it back feeds when it's shut off. On a gas engine it will back feed enough to power the ignition system and the tractor will not shut off. The diodes are cheap and can be picked up at Radio Shack.

Does a 1 or 3 wire alternator require a voltage requlator ?

No the alternators we use are the newer Chev delco 10si with internal V.R.s. One like what is used on a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC cost is around $45 at O'Reilly's and has a life time warranty if 3 wire. If it is a 1 wire cost is around $90 and a year warranty

If you want the original look of a delco generator, but the simplicity of a single wire alternator that puts out 70 Amps running and 60 at idle, Powermaster makes a single wire alternator that looks like a delco generator. (Made for the 55-57 chevy crowd.) A little on the spendy side though $425....

1 wire set ups cost you 3 times more then a 3 wire and are not any where near as dependable as t 3 wire. You can buy a 3 wire alternator for say a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC for around $45 plus a $10 core and it is simple to wire them up and depending on where you buy it, it could well have a life time warranty on it but you will never see that warranty on a 1 wire. Been wiring the 3 wire set ups now for over 2 decades and will never use another 1 wire

they are excellent.. one of the reasons you don't see generators on new stuff and haven't for yrs... if originality is the goal, then by all means, DON'T put one on. If dependability is the goal, do.

1 wire alternators usually need lots of rpms to get them to start charging. I hate to give a cold engine lots of rpms and I like my tractors to charge as soon as they are running. If you use a 3 wire they will start charging at a much lower rpm. Of course a good generator will do the job very well also. I don't find the excitment in using alternators on old tractors. Newer tractors using lots of amperage then yes an alternator is needed.

Agree. Had one on a 4020 LP as I recall and you had to start the engine and then rev it up to get the light to go out...start charging. Once it got started, It would show a faint glow at idle but off idle it would charge. I liked it because it was self contained and easy to install, even with it's little problem.

At least go with a three wire instead of the one wire.

On an additional note you might want to check n see if it will charge at your rpms, I usually have to throttle up the 8n to get it to start charging. Dont know if that the problem but thats something to check out

I like the simplicity of them, put one on my 8n a couple years ago, gonna get a 24volt one for my 4010 if I can't get the genny to work.

We just did a 12 volt conversion on a 1966 3020 at work. We used a kit from Abilene Machine that included alt., gear reduction starter and bracket for alt.. It was a 24 volt tractor and had a 24 volt alt. on it that still didnt work correctly. In my opinion the 12 volt conversion is the way to go. We still use 2to batteries just hooked up differently.
