I bought a 3020 JD diesel. The man that owned it said it is low hours, but it sat a lot. The weep holes at the block seep. Also, I used about a gallon of oil in 14 hours of running. could this be a ring stuck? It blows black smoke when you hit the throttle. Is the black smoke oil or fuel turned to high. |

| Hours are easy to tell.Low houred tractors are just like people they are only new once.I have looked at many low houred tractors that have a newer style tach.I bought one off Big Iron auction that they had taken a picture of tach that did not work.I sold it as hours unknown but it was in excellent condition and probably was with in a thousand from what it said but didnt know.I thought it was false advertising but it worked out O.K. |

| To a "trained Eye" it's easy Larry, but a novice has no knowledge of what to look for so they end up trusting the 'tach' and the 'talk'....and often lead astray of actual facts...and finding them out much to late,,Darn it |

IMHO hours on an hour meter indicate no real relevance to the actual hrs on machine. Many speed/hr meters on new generation tractors have been replaced or at least the drive cables broken and tractors run for hrs with no operating hr meter. I remember selling several cables and a few replacement hr meters when I stood "behind a JD dealers parts counter". |

| Ooh yes the hour meter can mislead you, Our local "Mega-Dealer" use to be notorious about changing hour meters in combines,,it"s not illegal,,but UN-ethical... you can change the reading on a $200,000 combine and get away with it,,change the reading on a $400 67 Impala and go to prison... |

| | Do the weep holes seep antifreeze, oil or both? What did the hour meter have on it? |

| Even if it sat a lot. Over 44 years the hours and deterioration of gaskets and seals does add up. Considering the purchase price and the cost of overhaul. How much do you plan on spending? Is this tractor for a collection, primary power on a hobby farm, an occasional use tractor on a working farm? Or your primary tractor to earn your living? |

Does the clutch pedal, draw bar show any wear or are 3pt balls tight in the draft arms?? I agree with Tim on the fact an overhaul is in the near future. |

| It"s not likely over fueled,, I would say it"s time for an O/H,,If you like the tractor and plan to keep it go with a Deere kit,and a set of injectors. |
