I have a 630 John Deere Gas, I had the head rebuilt, replaced the manifolds, had the carb rebuilt by one of the carb shops in two-cylinder magazine, it starts and runs beautifully, UNTIL...I have a 14 foot tandem disc, I can be pulling the disc for about 100 feet or so and it just plays with it and has a good time, then it slowly starts to die down and hit on one cylinder, I unhook the disc, limp it up to the shed and by the time im back to the shed its running great again. What could it be, I read a recent post here about a 3020 having similar issues, could it just be the coil? The coil looks like its never been off of the tractor. Thanks everyone!!

Check that the coil is wired to the proper polarity... in reply to tractorbafoon, 07-11-2012 08:16:37
I bought a 520 once that had the same problem...turned out the polarity on the coil was wrong.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

All 620/630's had a separate vent line on the top of the tank. Caps are NOT vented.

maybe fuel cap not venting. Next time it is acting up open the fuel cap and see if it gets better.

I would suspect the coil if it does it when its hot, loaded or no load.

Check the air cleaner, had one many years age that the mice had carried corn kernals into the air intake and then they were sucked down into the oil, it would idle perfect but when put under load the corn kernals would be sucked up from the oil to the bottom of the air cleaner and block air flow. When the load was taken off it would run perfect again.

Have you checked to see if you have rust in the gas tank? I had a very similar problem with my 51' AR. Would start, idol, and drive around just fine. When I'd pull our disk it would run great for about 50 yards then start to starve for fuel and eventually die.

Turns out I had a bunch of rust in the tank and the flakes got stuck in the stem of the sediment bowl assembly. restricted the gas flow only enough to make it run out when under heavy load.

These will run fine with the Power (Load) screw turned in for little of no load...
For a real "Load", do you have the Power (Load) screw turned out 2 turns or a little more..??
That really can bring them to "Life"...when Power is concerned..
Always be cautious of that Diaphram-style fuel shut off.. It can be a real bad source of FUEL in the Crankcase...( AND Fuel IN the Rafters)...
Check for GOOD, Steady fuel flow from the Float Bowl for 5 Minutes..should be a full stream...
Ron.

Make sure your getting good fuel supply to carb. Also does it have the diaphram type sediment bowl controled by the oil pressure? If so there could be a problem there also.

It slowly goes down when under load...if you let it fast idle for a long period, does it continue to run all right? If it does, I'd say the coil is fine, if it doesn't, feel it for overheating. Load/no load doesn't affect the coil. Same power is going through it either way. Maybe clip a volt meter to the input of the coil and watch that, and also clip a timing light to it and when it begins to falter, watch to be sure the light indicates spark right to the bitter end. If the light skips or goes dark, it's probably an ignition problem. Rule out the spark as the issue, and then we'll talk carburetion.
