Hi All, Have any of you JD guys ever removed the oil pump from a JDH ? I have one here with a broken helical drive gear. I think someone tried to turn it over with water in the crankcase and it was frosen. My friend and I have been working on it all week and we still havent got the pump out. Every time we try to take another part off we run into a few nuts or bolts that are almost imposible toget at with a ordiary wrench. I think John Deere must have bought the oil pump from Fordson and built the H around it. This is my twentyfourth restoration and I have never had one this dificult. I think this H is going to wind wind up a parts tractor because putting it together will be even more difficult. ---Harold. |

I have removed a bunch of them in years past as I did have several H parts tractors. I likely had better access since I was tearing it apart anyhow several other items were allready off. But I do remember doing some for repairs too. The push rods need to come out for room to reach down in there. Lots of lines and fitting need to come off too. I also think I pulled off the part that holds the pressure adjustment on the side to get romm for it to drop out the bottom hole too.

Per the I&T Manual---- remove crankcase cover and remove oil lines from the pump body. (Looks like 5 of them) Remove the pipe plug from the right side of the crankcase and screw the oil pressure adjusting screw all the way in. Remove capscrews holding pump to crankcase and withdraw the pump. Sounds simple enough, but I have not actually done it. Haven't worked on an H since 1954. Good Luck!

I know the oil line to the LH main is a bugger when doing it through the rod access port in the top of the block, especially with the hood and fuel tank in place. As I recall, it's 11/16ths and requires a short wrench. I got one at Sears. You'll want to tie a string around it because you'll drop it into the bottom of the crankcase several times and having a string on it is by far the easiest way to fish it out!

Found the wrench in the crankcase of mine when I rebuilt it. It was the only wrench I had that would on those oil lines. Richard
