Basically, no difference in X and XH. 1042 is the number usually found on Wico's with the short drive lug as used on John Deere's. 477 is the number for long lug JD magnetos. However, over the years, mags have been swapped and modified to the extent one has to be careful with the numbers. Hooking a battery wire to any magneto usually de-magnetizes the armature, rendering it useless.

I have never heard of it demagnetizing the armature but it does burn out the coil.

Isn't the XB the dist. ? The X is the series and the XH-1042 is the exact model number which designates the application.
