4020 24 volt problem

I've got a 4020 diesel that I'm having trouble with again. About three years ago I had the starter rebuilt. Worked fine for about a year. Now sometimes it can sit for a couple months and start right up. Then it might only sit a week and won't turn over and I'll have to charge both batteries. When This problem started again I took the starter back to have it checked out and there is nothing wrong with it. What I'm wondering is it possible the generator could have a ground and depending where it stops sometimes it drains the batteries and somtimes it doesn't. I would prefer to keep this tractor original so I would prefer to not change to an alternator. Has anybody used a 12 volt Delco generator from a gas and just changed to a 12 volt starter? This would keep it looking original but I didn't know if the amperage draw would be to high. The whole wire harness has been replaced too. The generator and voltage regulator are the only things I have not touched because it is charging. Thanks as always for any info on this.

The 12v generator would work on a conversion but they have a low charge rate (25 amp I think) compared to an alternator with 72 amp output. The generator would be comparable charging rate to the 24v generator.
