Whats the main areas to inspect and repair on the A, B, and G tractors for steering wear? I hate the shimmy when going down the road. These are narrow front ends with rollomatic i might add.

You can sometimes take a lot of shimmy out by adjusting the eccentric bushing in the top of the pedastal.. but be careful, if you adjust it too much, the steering will bind when turning very sharp in either direction. Other than that, replacement of the sector and/or worm gear (steering rod) may be necessary.

I had trouble with my late B not being able to keep the eccentric adjustment from slipping. Friend suggested removing the slotted head screw and replace with a grade 8 socket type screw that can be tightened better. Adjusted and tightened with allen wrench socket, and shimmy problem has not returned.
Also wheel bearings should be tightened with slight pre-load to eliminate any play.

M&D Restoration Parts has new bushings, gears and other steering parts. If you need any of those give Rich Duane a call at 410-643-2899.

My 50 shimmied real bad in road gear on a hard surfaced road. Turned out to be a bent roll-o-matic arm. Replaced it with one from a "B". No shimmy now at any speed.

Alright thanks Rusty Wheel. If a wheel bearing is dragging, this could possibly make it shimmy?

I would first check the clearance between the worm gear and the spur gear at the top of the steering box and next I would check the wheel bearings. I don't think the eccentric bushing that adjusts the gear clearance is available from JD anymore. If you need one, about the only thing you can do is find one better than the one you have or have one made. Good luck.
