Here is a pic of the 4960 that I have mentioned in the past, I took a fresh pic of it last week, it has been setting there since 1992, never been used.

why do people say the 60 series aren"t as good as the 55??
also can you give us a refresher course on this tractor story??
thanks shaun

Yikes Tim. You mean it's been there since almost new? How many hours? Can someone grab it and put it in a museum?

Yes, since it was new, no hours on it, the plastic is still on the seat. The owner just pasted away a few weeks ago, he was "odd" to say the least, there is a older 4020 and 3020 on the other side of the crib, 2 or 3 Massey Harris 44's, a couple of pony's a Deere 8 bottom hydro wide plow several tillage pieces, an 8850,a 4430 HFWD,and another 4020,,all been setting since 1992, I first saw them in 1993.This 4960 drove my brother and me crazy when we first saw it, we tryed to buy it back then and the guy wouldn't talk about it. I have some more pics I'll try to post after bit,,this is my first attempt...

It's still in the operating room...I still need to get pics in a file, and I'm about to get a new computer so I may wait to build the files..mail me and I'll send some out of my mail box,it simpler...

The only difference between a 55 and a 60 is the stacks in the hood...I'll add to this story as I can,,I just got a notion to try and post this,,I've been itching to share a bunch of stuff with you guys,,I have a ton of cool pics on cd's..

I'll say it's a shame, I spent a couple hours up there looking at this stuff with trees growing up through it. Years ago back in the 70's we sold this guy a lot of equipment, but not this 4960, I'm not sure where he bought it, this farm is about 20 miles north of me.

I overhauled a 4960 when I was at the dealer because of the rings on the pistons causing an oil consumption problem. If I remember right it was the early 4960's and this one had around 2500 hours and the owner had a second one doing the same thing. Very good operator and customer. Not abused. Deere did stand behind the expenses but didn't mention it to everybody. Also the last good tractor JD made.chris

We have 2 of them on the home farm, they are good tractors, I O/H'ed one of them a couple years ago, and re-paired the C2 clutch in the other one last spring, they have both rolled the tach's over. The one in the pic has no hours on it,,it is an early 1972.

Wow! Thats is a sad situation, obivously a differnt kind of person who would buy that and let it sit especially outside. It would probably take a lot of work and money to make it a worker again. BTW some people have argued with me that Deere never made a 60 series....had to pull out the tech. manuals to convince them. Keep the pics coming Tim, happier ones are welcome, Bob

I know what you mean,, this tractor sold for $92,000...there is a barn that is always locked up near this tractor that is rumured there are some "new" Massy Harris tractors in it, this guys Grand Father was a Massy Harris dealer years ago,,I would love to see into that barn,,there are a few Massy Harris tractors setting around, a 6600 Side Hill that I delivered back in 1975 is setting out side with vines growing around it, it's just like they walked away in 1992...

Why don't you post some photo's of your "super cool" hyd test stand that you sent me???????????????

Last summer a local farmer passed away and had 20 school buses full of things he had purchased new or at sales. He had a late 70s Ford pickup with 32 miles on it and a grain truck with 200 miles that were basically junk from sitting and rodent damage.

I'm work'in on it...This computer I'm using is a bit clumsy right now,,it's an old 'hand crank' model...

Yes, this stuff will turn to junk setting around un-protected. We have been wondering if this 4960 is stuck or not, the wiring and cab interior seem good, the weather cap was still down,,I'm thinking the pistons could be sticking...we have a lot of moisture here in Ohio.

Send me the photo's of your hyd test stand and I'll see if I can post them on YT for you. I think your stand is very ingenious for a "farm boy".

Tim, I don't know what part of town you're in but on 40 between West Jeff and Hilliard Rome, there is a 3300 combine and stash of JD implements that I pass sometimes.

Tim is a great guy and does great work---But if you go to see him make sure your brakes are good.

Some big hills in that part of the state.

Interesting stuff about that 4x4 Deeere

I'm south east of Columbus 45 miles,,you may be seeing the Tri-Green consignment sale yard, it's along I-70 in that area they have about 30 acres of gems of all kinds, fun place to drive through..they have a large sale each month and stuff on the lot is for sale daily. It sorta looks like a plane flew over and started dropping stuff out....

Tim,

If you have time, I would also appreciate some photos of your hydraulic test stand.

No it's by Hubbard Rd. I know where Tri Green is. The guy bought our bulldozer and trencher and it's across from JD. Are you down by Mayer? That's my servicing Massey dealer.

Wonder if they will have a sale soon? Or maybe the family is just as cookoo I have seen things like this before.

We know of a situation i believe it was in Nebraska where a man bought a new jd 60 row crop for some reason he was upset i believe it had to do with the seat cushion anyway he put in in a shed and never used it an acquaintance ran on to the deal around 1990 and finally ended up buying the tractor ,,,the tractor was exhibited at the Two cylinder expo still had dealer paper hang tags on it as far as we know the tractor was never started after its initial delivery. It was exhibited as non running probably less than one hour run time.

I will try to find out more, I have a few more pics I'll post tomorrow. I went to the farm,a different location, where the 8850 4430, and another 4020 were setting,,only the 4020 was there, I could see where some one cut some small trees and pulled the 8850 and the 4430 out of the weeds just recently,,it is a strange ordeal for sure, I have been wondering about this stuff since 1993 when first seen them parked,,now that the owner has passed away it will be interesting to see what happens...I would still like to have a look into that barn that has been locked,,to see if there realy are some new Massy Harris tractors in there...I'm like the old guy watching pretty young women at the beach,,he didn't want one,,he just liked to look....

I'll bet the Vultures(heirs) are circling similar to what happens after most funerals of anyone that owned anything of value.
