A Is early 40s. Flywheel start, Cast wheels B has no U bolts anywhere near the spark plugs. The frame completly covers the area where the compression relief ports would be so I cant see if theyre plugged or not, tho, as close to the frame as they are, and completly hid. They would have to be plugged. AND, Yes, it has a water pump. |

Take a magnet and see if it sticks to the radiator fins. An origonal water pump B had steel fins due to war time shortages. Does the ventalater pump tube go straight into the air intake pipe in the upright part just above the carburetor? Do the brake drums have a nut on the outer end of the shaft to hold the drums on? On the pwertrol are the dummy plugs for the hoses held in with a screw on ring or is there a release lever to move on the side of the powertrol?

It has the battery under the seat, makeing it waaaaaaay past wartime. The brake drums have nuts holding them on, There is a tube comeing out of the pipe just ahead of the casrb and going back into the head. The hyd lines have been blocked off with pipe plugs and it has the release/lock lever on the side.

On the model A, what is the part/casting number of the maincase? Is it A1140R, A2300R, or A2644R? The number is ahead of and slightly below the clutch pulley. There is a heat code number along with this part number that may be helpful in dating the tractor as well. The heat code looks like a tag but is a raised insert on the casting, and both run vertically. Maybe you already said, but does it have a cast or angle frame? Start from there and let's see what else will be needed to date the "A".

I don't know where you got those numbers, but they are not the maincase casting (part) number or the heat code. The part number must be A1140R, A2300R, or A2644R and the heat code (looks like tag) will be a 1,2,or3 digit number with no letters. These numbers are just ahead of the clutch pulley on the right side of the engine/trans maincase, and run vertically. The hand lift has nothing to do with the tractor, that's something that comes with certain implements. If the powerlift housing still has its' tag, and it's original, it can be used to date the tractor. Look on the powerlift housing right in between the two mounts for the pedal cross shaft and see if there is a tag there. It is a strip tag about two inches long with two rivets, and will read PL-XXXXX. Recheck the numbers I mentioned and see what you find. We will have this "A" figured out in short order.

I guess A-1140 R is it. There was a bit of rust down where the leg of the P was that would turn it into an R likely. So, What year is it??

Saw the studs or rivits for the tag on the lift, but tags long gone. I looked again at those numbers on the frame in front of the pulley and below the mat. I was wrong. WITHOUT a doubt. They say A-1140 P The stamped tag says 82-66

You've got to give us more help here, there were running changes made in both those tractors and something like 100,000 As made as the early styled(39-47) with heavy frame instead of stamped steel. We need info on serial no. part numbers, lift types, pto sizes block, head numbers and we might be able to narrow it down to a couple year range, Lots without electric start and cast wheels were options help us and we will help you.

Looking back at your last post, The A with hi-lo shift and 2 gears it is before 1941 when they changed to 6 speed, If it is styled then it is 39,40,or early 41. If unstyled(radiator covered) it is 1934 to 1938.

It is a styled, 2 speed A with H L. It has cast wheels like the B. When did they stop the spoke wheels? If its a 39/40, It dosent have the rather odd shaped casting over the brake drum I remember them haveing, or at least the B haveing.

| | With the information you've given....... The A would be an early 40s model. The B would be a late 40s - early 50s. Next question please. |

Well both the petcocks and water pump could have been added. If I were going to have to guess I would think you have a 51 and the water pump was added. There was a SB that allowed for a second battery on the B but I never saw one. Said it was for cold weather. All B models I ever saw only had one battery. There were few changes in the B so knowing you have a 50-52 should get you by as far as parts go.

Neither my 50 B back in 68, nor this one has conduet over the wires. Dad had a 48 A and Im sure it didnt have any conduit on the wires either. Just went out and looked again, Theres a rubber piece ment to hold the wires together, but one of the holders is gone and its only on one wire. Checked underneith, and it still has the petcocks. Now, im wondering if mine had them, cause, just like this one, I couldnt see them, and I just thought they had got past that when they went with 2 batterysNobodies got any idees on the A?

You may have to look under the engine to see them. I know on the late A they are on the bottom. The u-bolt would be on the conduit the plug wires run through. If no u-bolt it will have a two piece clamp. My best guess so far is you have a late 1952 model. Serial number between 306600 and 310772.

Post a picture of the tractors and the date can be narrowed down. It's really hard to tell by just an explanation over the web.
