4020 Belt Pulley - Done - Pics

Well I got it all taken apart like I wanted, cleaned up and primed and painted, ordered new seals for it and put them in. And here it is all painted up. Took longer then I thought, but being winter was a nice little project to tackle.

I do have one question though, in the first picture what is that hole for in the housing? I am going to take a guess at that is for when it's bolted to the tractor if you over fill it, it will drain out that hole? That's about the only thing I can think of, when I took it apart there was grease pushed up in there, it wasn't open.

Will try to include as many pictures of it as I can from start to finish as I can, but don't know how many pictures it will let me upload, and hopefully this will help others someday if they run across one as I couldn't find much info, accept for what I asked on here. So thanks for all the help!

I was curious about the hole and looked at the parts break down. I'm assuming it's there to remove the pin/shaft for the bearing. chris
 
My first thought was it for a lathe center for machineing ? But if it goes all the way through ? then maybe it is to have some kinda press in vent pipe ?
 
Mike, I think you might be right. It does goes all the way through, it is a short pipe, with the opening on the inside smaller then on the outside. But I was thinking it being a drain of some sort, which I thought would be odd because a little extra oil wouldn't hurt it I wouldn't think. But I bet it's like you say and for any pressure that builds up in there, as it's a small enough housing it could build some? Or is my thinking wrong there?

I have seen pictures of the 4010 and 420 one's on ebay and they have the same hole on them too - so it's common on them, so must be for something.

I think I asked this before to, but would think John Deere Hy-Gard would be satisfactory to run in it. The old 'John Deere Special Purpose 303' oil must have been green huh? As the inside of the casting had green on it.
 
Without a book I can only guess ? but my guess would be gear lube.
Does that attachment appear in the tractor owners manuals ? or have it's own manual ?
 
The attachment is shown in the manual. I looked in dad's 4020 and 3020 manuals and it shows it in three different parts of the manual I think. One for mounting and operating and another on the maintenance of it pretty much.

The manual says to run John Deere Special Purpose 303 in it, which in the manual also stated that was to be used in the transmission as well. But then in the early 70's someone told me Deere dropped that oil. So now that's why I am thinking it would be best to run Hy-Gard in it as that is Deere's current transmission oil. I would think gear oil would be pretty heavy oil for the gears spinning that fast. In the manual it talks about the speed of the pulley and what size pulley to run on the implement to get the desired speed as well. I could scan them in when I get home tonight if you wanted.
 
I went on line and looked at the parts breakdown and do agree with you. It looks like it is to remove the dowel pin that holds that bearing.
 
It does hold that small bearing in the picture on the inside, I just find it odd that they made the center hollow like that all the way through. Would think they would just put it on the inside of the casting and not all the way through to the outside. If the center was solid metal you could still tap out the dowel that holds the bearing on it, but with the center hollowed out like that the oil can run out. Not a big deal but was just curious was all!
 
Yes a hole all the way through seems odd ? Have you checked ther specs. on that dowel at JD parts ? I wonder if it is to have a hole ?
