4020 Fuel Pump

I have a 1965 John Deere 4020 Diesel and have a question regarding the fuel pump. About 15 years ago the mechanical stops on the speed control lever was worn out so you could accidently shut off the fuel while pushing the speed control lever forwards to idel the tractor. My father had it converted to a key shut off simular to the late 4020's. The mechanic installed a solenoid in the fuel pump to turn the fuel on or off. I would like to know if anyone has ever done this because I would like to put it back to original. I do not know what exactly they did to the fuel pump to make it work this way. I'm assuming that they mechanically adjusted the linkage and removed some thing from the pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That pump with the mechanical shut-off had a two-piece throttle shaft running through it. Each end had a control arm. One for throttle and one for shut-off. Inside the pump, there is a snap ring with a big ear on it. When you pull the shut-off lever, that ear pushes the metering valve closed and shuts the tractor off.

The electrics shut-off uses a steel swing-arm to do the same job as that ear. Spring pressure shuts the tractor off, and an electro-magnet pulls against that spring to let the tractor run.

If someone converted you pump, they probably changed the top cover to an electric-shut-off type that was pre-drilled to accept the electric solenoid. If your original two shafts are still in the pump, it is very easy to convert back to manual. All you need is the snap ring with the ear on it. Then you'd have to plug those two holes left when you remove the solenoid assembly.

I just converted my Case 580CK from manual to electric (like was done to your's).

That snap ring with the ear probably cost less then $5.

Here's a picture of the shut-off snap-ring with an "ear."
