I know a chap selling his father's 4020 , its a side console model with HFWD , its clean with overhauled engine , clutch , good tyres , even a new ROPS . They are very , very rare here in UK , so difficult to value , but what would it be worth in USA ? Thank you .

They are rare in the U.S. also. You didnt say which transmission which makes a difference.Being a 1970 hurts it some and if it is nice probably 17 to 20K.I know of one really nice one w/o canopy sold for 19K at auction a year ago in Ia.The number produced is not known so that seems to add to their demand. To the right person they are one of the most desirable. There was a gas HFWD 3020 unrestored and not real nice that brought 36K at Expo.

I read your post again and seen clutch was redone so that makes it a syngro.I assume its not low hours but the ones that bring the most are low houred originals preferably with original paint. They can be Expo quality painted and look like they never left the show room and not bring much more than original.A pretty sharp collector told me the is no substitute for low hours and factory paint as it can never be new twice.

Mike,It seems like the 72s are what serious collectors want. The side counsels were from 69/72.There were just a few changes such as shifter and higher manifold in 71/72.The price of 13,500 would be cheap in the USA but Im quessing the freight from UK would make it quite a bit higher. You would not think a year on a 41 year old tractor would make a difference but it does .Probably $1000 or more.

At 13,500 US I'd say it's a better investment then a 401K ! Some are paying that much and more for a 2 wd late 4020 over here.

The value of 4020s in the UK cannot be directly converted into USD.
Also the year doesnt make as much of a difference in the UK. Side console is 'preferred', and few people could tell you the differences between 69/70 & 71/72 and so there is little difference in price between a 69 and 72 (in UK) eg, there was a 72 4020 that (i think) went unsold on ebay the other day for £7500, where as a '66 was sold for £7000.

As for the HFWD thats for sale, its a nice tractor. Some people would find the correct fenders to put back on it, (wether that is UK or US spec is up to the buyer), its also missing the rear engine side panels, one side emblem, both rockshaft covers and correct battery boxes. In the video that they have posted of farmingforum.co.uk it looks like the bonnet [i:81461a8e35]might[/i:81461a8e35] have been repainted. I think it will struggle at £8800 (+vat), mostly due to the few numbers of JD collectors (look at the recent Newark show for example)
