I am looking at a 1969 4020 powershift side console. I know that they made these until 1972 and was wondering if a 71 or 72 would be better or if there is even any differences from these years or they all were the same. Any information on this would be great. Thanks,Scott

I think it depends on your goal. If you are collecting you may want a 1971 or 1972. If you are farming with it you may want a 1969 or 1970. Cost will be less. The 1971 and 1972 do have several differences, I could not tell you if there are any that are life or performance based. These tractors have a longer shift lever, single high-low lights, a different intake manifold, and ???? Beyond that I don't know. Paul

floorboard mounted head light dimmer switch at SN 250001-

different diesel intake manifolds at SN 280001-

Fender mount amber warning lights were changed at SN 25001-

The early ones came with a small injector pump that was not the best. Then they went back to the origonal style pump with electric shut off in 71-72. Early tractors could be updated. Load control shaft seals were changed in ther too.

The 72 only had one bolt on wide front where telescoping axle slides. The block on 71/72 had a place on left side of block for A/C compressor.Even though a lot of them have 18.4X38 tires that I feel look too big seem to have came more on 71/72.I think there may be another setting on the L/D lever.Actually there isnt that much different .Everyone likes the longer shift lever that can be easily changed otherwise as long as they are side counsel condition is the most important thing. Its funny IH collectors want the early tractors in a series and JD guys want later ones.It seems odd that a 72 4020 will outsell a 4430 with cab sometimes a 4440.
