4020 3 point trouble after replacing load shaft

so my load control shaft on my early 4020 was leaking. left control in "d", removed shaft put in new bushings, seals, as well as new bushings in main support. some moved load control to "l" and back to "d" while i was working on it, but did not see that it did anything to the arm in the rear end.
put it all together and now the 3 point only goes up about half way, no matter where i have the control, and it wont raise at all until the lever on the dash is almost all the way up. did it mess it up when the lever got moved (i think son was messing with it) or did someone try to adjust it with a bad shaft and now i have to readjust it? cant find my darn manual at this point so thought i"d try here.
thanks
Gary

I don't have the procedure in front of me but I would readjust your rockshaft. Your local JD dealer should be able to copy the rockshaft section from the tech manual off of their lap top for you.

The load control shaft passes through a horseshoe shaped section on the load control arm. Nothing to break or lose off. So I'd just remove plug in the rear of diff housing housing and use a 9/16 deep socket(taped or welded to a long extension) and adjust nut to where 3pt raises when forward edge of 3pt control handle is even with the number 1 on the scale on quadrant on the dash.

There is a lobe pinned to the cam follower that "can" be knocked off if you get wreckless sending the load shaft through the case,,I hope this is not your problem,,I had a 4030 in here a few weeks ago that this happened to the customer,,"BIG" job to repair,,finals need to come off and diff,. needs to be lifted out of the case to get it repaired,,you can re-adjust the hitch settings, but in all reality that should not have changed much buy just R&R of the shaft...Darn it...

i remember looking in the case and seeing a pin next to the arm that goes up to the cam. it all came apart nice and the only problem i was having other then leak, was when you let the 3 point down it stayed under pressure for abit for some reason. it's not my first shaft replacement and dont recall any strangeness to the ordeal other then the arm seemed to be a bit forward on the bottom but not bad. was thinking of taking rockshaft control off the side to look down in there, but wouldnt ya know, i got a cab on it also.....

Lets hope it's not a damaged following arm, the "pressure" while going down could be a sticking valve or a bit of some thing under a valve(like a piece of backing ring) there is a sequence to adjust the 3pt that needs to be followed closely in the correct order of directions, it is in the tech manual, I would go through that first. they can be worn a lot and still have a fairly good control to them, I had a old "worn out" 4020 on the 3pt blade grading the drive way the other day and was amazed at how good it would feather the blade....

someone suggested the adjustment on the back first. as work out as the bushings were in the draw bar support, makes me wonder if someone did not adjust the thing for better control while it was worn, and now with new bushings it's way out of wack.....not even sure if thats possible. just seems odd that before i replaced the shaft the 3 point would move almost as soon as the lever was moved from the lowered position and now it dont move till about an inch and a half from the top, like it's stuck in the "L" or something.

something else just dawned on me. once i had it back together and it would not move correctly, i tried moving the "d" control to the "L" position and noticed some resistance on the dash lever. not much, but was not as free flowing as usual. does that make sense?

Moving the load lever puts a bit of tension on the linkage normally ..when you go in through the bung plug in the rear with your 9/16 socket and extension be sure to lock it on some how so you don't drop it off,,I have one welded to a long extension...don't discount you control cable going bad ether....

According to the parts schematic for an "early 4020 < SN 200,999" the part R40889 follower that I think you're referring to isn't on the L/D control arm on this model.

I guess I was thinking it was a late 4020...and had a R40889 follower and a R40891 pin.....
