4020 HP? NO Turbo

Looking for some real numbers of horsepower measured with dyno. Not wanting to compare with tractors with turbos. I want to know how much you can get out of a natural aspired 4020 with only fuel system modifications.

It has been a while, so don't go putting a lot of faith in my memory. . .

I think that opening up the original pump to the max will produce a hundred PTO horse at rated speed.

But not much more than that.

Not uncommon to get 125-130 turned wide open,-----BUT DON'T-----if you like your tractor and want it to last more than a few days. Dealer I worked for, regularly sold a 100 or more a year and I checked them all before they were delivered. Most ran between 105 & 110 straight out of the box with 105 very common.

We are building a 4020 from the ground up and still have a long way to go. Just got the fuel system back this afternoon. Judging by what you are saying I've got something a little past turned up, or so my fuel man says. It doesn't need to stay in the field all day, just run really good for two minutes.

Rex, I have two 4020's. I have only had the one on a dyno and it turned very close to 130 h.p. It has a 7-4 leaf spring in it with all shims removed. My other 4020 will do everything this one will so I figure it is running very close to that as well. Both have ran at this power level for over 25 years. Mike

First dynos are not all accurate and can vary quite a bit.The ones that show extra H.P.are like the older speedometers that made you feel like your car was fast even if it was average.I have seem many 4020s and anything much over 100H.P.produces excess fuel that results in extra smoke which is wasted fuel and at $3.50 a gallon counts up.After many years the cheapest and most economical power comes in larger tractor.

I actually replied and did not read your second post that sounded as if you were going to pull it.In that case and that you are doing a complete rebuild depending on pistons, headwork ,cam, and pump I wouldnt be surprised to see H.P. of 160 or more.I assume you are pulling in a stock farm class.Hard to hide extra power as we have a local pickup pull for stock unaltered trucks that a few show up with a couple hundred extra horses and thats when the fun begins.

My pump rebuilder turned the pump up 10% when I got the pump rebuilt. He says that is pretty common. He wants a disclaimer if you turn it up more than 20%. The tractor runs real good and does not smoke unless under full load with 10%.

Thanks for the reply. Speaking of the head, we kinda got the cart before the horse with the fuel pump, and haven't touched the head yet. Any secrets you know or are willing to let out about a 404 head for a 4020? The rest of the engine is stock, but new. I am talking new crank, not reman(that's a long story, in short it was on a dealer shelf for a long time and he wanted us to have it.) New liner Packs, new cam bearings. We even drilled the flywheel to use the two extra bolt holes that are in all new cranks. So really, the head is the last thing that we have a chance to improve. My fuel man swore me not to tell what he did to my pump and injector combo, but he said that with a tight engine 140hp+. So what can I do to the head?

I have a 4010 gas,PTO clutch starts smoking at 180 hp on 1000 rpm shaft,This is up for sale.563-543-7981 good luck
