4020 12 volt conversion which batteries?

I am thinking about converting my 4020 to 12 volt and I want to use the original battery boxes that go under the floor plate. Is it best to use one long 12 volt battery or should I use two 6 volt batteries hooked together?

I did this last year on my 3020. Depending on which kit you purchase or if you're using spare parts, you can usually just use one 12 volt battery. However on my tractor I used two (existing) 12 volt batteries and conected them positive to positive to starter, with a ground strap on each battery to the frame. That worked great for me. Check with external_link or WaltsTractors for kits. I paid $490 for mine with all new parts and wiring. I think they have instructions posted somewhere you could look at. I saw my instructions the other day, I will see if I can find them again.

Bob, It depends how old your 12 volts are. If they"re getting some age or you"ve got a weak one then replace them with 2 6 volts, If you"ve just replaced the 12 volts like I had when I converted my 4020 to a 12 volt system then save yourself a little money and use your existing batteries. A nice thing about 2 12 volts on a 12 volt system if you"ve got a bad battery a 4020 will still start on 1 12 volt. jmho. John

Is it possible to convert a starter from 24V to 12V?? I have an alternator already installed but the starter has 24V tag on it. I didn't notice how the 2 12V batteries are hooked up. They are very large and in a homemade box mounted to the side rail. I want to put the long rectangle ones back under the platform like they should be.

Yes the 24 volt starter can be converted with new field coils and solenoid. I am pretty sure they told me the armature was the same. Did the one from an industrial 500 (3020) didn't seem to work the best ? so got a starter from a later model that was made for 12 volt a little better.

I then used the converted starter on our 4020 gas by converting it by changing the drive.

I would use two 12V batts.
Something you see more and more is- instead of special cables with multiple ends- is one cable from each batt to the solenoid, and one cable from each batt to ground at or near the starter.

Get the Denso starter, do not waste time with the Delco. It will crank the tractor over much better. I would also think about an unload solenoid for the hydraulic.
