has anyone converted their tractor to NORMAL 12 volt standard sized batteries , fabricated a tray for them and hung the saddle boxxes up in the shop for the future ? ... My 4020 is demanding another set of those skinnyaz batrries that aint worth adam and wont hold charge as soon as the warranty expires , over the last 25 yrs i have bought enuf batterries to build a small block building ... aint gonna do it again , , need some good ideas ON HOW TO MAKE THE TRAY .. THANX

drop me your email to [email protected]. I can give you pictures of my box. It works with the 158 loader or without (with small mod while welding). I used 2x2 angle iron a little piece of 3/8 x 2 flat iron. I alse went to a single large battery. Its 1600cca warm 1300 cold. I love it, its a touch bigger physically than 2 of the skinnies together. It also cost less than one skinny btw.

Really don't see the big deal with the original size batteries. I had to replace mine last fall and when I took them out to my amazement, they were 6 years old. They were COMMERCIAL batteries. I replaced them with Interstate and hoping for another 6 years but won't be holding my breathe. This tractor gets used almost daily in the winter.

I never thought much about those batteries either. I also thought they were a JD idea only.
But once at a car show I looked under the hood of a 1950's something Buick and lowe and behold it had those too ! So it predated the Deere's.

I have seen several 4020s over the years with an angle iron battery box hanging off the side of the frame.

I didn't like the original ones as they didn't have deep of reserves in power for long cranking. The total amp capacity was much lower and if it didn't take off reasonably quick you could definately tell that it was losing cranking power. With this one I have yet to notice that. I will never go back to the 2 skinnies, but everyone has a preferance that works for em.

Here is two rough photos of the one I made for my 3020. One picture is far off but complete and one picture is when I was trying adding extra steps. So the front bracket is loose and the battery has a charger hooded to it but you can get the general idea. I made a step out of the battery "shelf". The tan material is natural rubber scraps from work and I use it to flop over the posts. Wood is in behind the battery. Paul in Mississippi

The battery "shelf" is 3/16" plate bent. It sagged some with my weight and I added a support angle under it, kind of hard to see but it is there in the daylight photo. Paul

Running the skinny batteries dry is a common occurrence due to the awkward access.
Any battery is ruined with low electrolyte levels.

I try not to post stuff I can't back up, but in this case............my recollection is that the originals were 3EEs; 3ETs will fit in there (maybe a tiny bit taller) and will give much better service.

In these pics I don't have my "retention" rod set up to prevent the 8D battery from coming out, not that it can slide as its so dang heavy. I did make a small angle iron tray to put the battery into so that the battery isn't slid "on" going in and out and has support in the middle as well as teh edges etc. Works with the loader just fine. I love it. Best thing I have done for her yet.

my 7700t combine has one optima gell cell battery and it will crank it over very well in any weather and it starts hard like any deere of that era.

My 1963 4010D we cut away the sheetmetal and welded in 1" angle framed to accept 31 series batteries that still reside under the platform and swing out for access. I placed a rubber mat under the battery and cover it with another held in place with a rubber tarp strap. I replaced the lock down handles with the angle iron and drilled two holes, one for the handle to pivot on and the other to "catch" the angle under for the stop. I have never posted pictures before, am not sure how thats accomplished.

'57 Ford car had them - I think?? At least a similar design - mebbe not same size.
