I currently have a 540 RPM 12' Rhino bush hog that I use with my 1966 4020 diesel. The mower I have is nice, but it is a little to wide for some of my pig paths on my property. There is a 1000 rpm 10' Rhino at a dealership close by that may fit my farm better. My question is in regard to the RPM differances. Is one better than the other? Would the 1000 RPM mower be less abusive on my tractor? I use the mower for mowing fields and small trees, nothing bigger than 1.5" and I don't have any big rocks or stumps to hit either.

Yes the 1000 would be better, it lets the drive line absorb the torque better. your 420 will switch over easey..

Yes,horsepower is equal to RPM times foot-pounds,so when you double the speed you half the torque. Therefore all the pto components inside the tractor, the pto drive line, and the input shaft on the mower will be running at half the foot-pounds torque. Also the driveline will run smoother with less vibration.

Thanks for the info. I have never used anything with 1000 RPM, but this sounds like a good option. The dealer is having a hard time selling it because 1000 rpm tractors are hard to find around here. It may work out good for me. Thanks.

I will echo what the others have said. The faster pto speed will be much easier on your tractor and the driveline of your cutter. Sometimes (but not always) a cutter with the higher speed will have a faster tip speed than the same cutter with the slower speed. It's taken 50 years but things are finally coming around to the 1000 rpm speed. About all I use the slower speed for anymore around my farm is for grain augers. I've got enough smaller tractors around for that. With anything bigger than that I get the faster speed. Mike

The tip speed should be near the same, do to the gear box gearing,as on a 1000 RPM round baler or spreader....I once ran a 540 snow blower on a 1000 only 4630 it would sling snow into the next county, but it worked the crap out of the tractor...

It depends on the cutter. I have seen Deere specifications on some cutters and the faster speed pto has a faster tip speed. It isn't absolute but it does happen. It depends on the ratio in the gearbox. Mike

I looked at Rino"s specs. The tip speed is the same on 540 or 1000 pto speed. Horsepower is speed x torque. So when you increase the PTO speed then the torque goes down. It will not make one bit of difference to your tractor.
That being said I hate having something 1000 pto around my farm. I had a mower conditioner several years ago that was 1000 pto. It seemed every time I wanted to use it with a different tractor I had a hassle with getting the shafts to change. Nothing on the farm right now that has 1000 pto. I hope I can keep it that way.

I didn't see much blade tip speed in these 2 JD cutters. Fact is the 540 rpm center gearbox BTS is faster than 1000 rpm gearbox
