4020 G stalls..........

hi--my 4020 gas has been stalling when i let the clutch out...i have to choke it. it starts excellent and does NOT backfire. it is better after it warms up. is it the nature of the beast
or can i adjust it....richer,leaner? oh--it does not smoke either. thanks

Could be the centrifugal timing advance mechanism under the plate ,the ignition points are located on. A little oil on it and some under the rotor will probably make a huge difference. Points might also need to be replaced.

I call myself a mechanic,,but I can't make a 3020 or 4020 gas run right, I have fiddled with the advance and even spent some time swaping the wieghts in the advance, they will run right today and fall on there nose tomorow, it seems that once you get them loaded and pulling they are "fair" but comming off idle and working at low RPM's it's all different....I fix most of them around here with a combine motor, makes the customer happy....I think that's why Deere scrapped them all in 1974,,a great decision..

Tim; Have the ones you had that trouble with still had the aluminum MS carb. on them ? I had those troubles on ours until I switched it to a Zenith carb.
In cold weather you need to switch the manifold heat block around too.

I have a 4010 gasser with the Marvel carb as my loader tractor.
To get it to run, I have to switch the manifold block to "heat" and have blocked the inlet and outlet ports on the "power diaphram" in the back cover of the carb. This power diaphram does not sound like your problem since you didn't say it loaded up and ran rich.

They are cold blooded and it will take 15 minutes or so to warm up enough to vaporize the gasoline in the intake manifold even with the heat block flipped to "heat".

Once warm, my 4010 runs very well. (well, almost as good as my Farmalls....LOL)
