4020 seat suspension

We have an early 4020 and the suspension on the seat isn't working. At first I thought it was froze up but after taking it off I don't think so. There is however a small cable at the front that looks like it wraps around a cam and then attaches to something. that and a coil flat spring looks like it might help raise the seat back up. One end of the cable was unhooked.

where does this hook onto and what does it do?

It hooks to a little bard on the frame,, what it does is hold the seat back to enable the operater to stand or to get to the trans oil fill opening,,it has nothing to do with the ride. The bushings, levers and shock/spring assembly does all that. They can be complex to re-build but worth it. Take a couple of pictures before you start tossing it apart, and make sure the bushing holes are not worn too much(they most likely are)..Get the shock/ spring assembly from an after-market site alrerady assembled,,they are worth it...

I'm currently rebuilding the seat on my 2520.....I have the shop manual and it's worth every penny. (lots of pennies)

You can go the jdparts and get a picture; it'll help some.

Speaking of pennies....the price for the bushings are ridiculous. $6.75 a piece. But I needed all eight of them. I'm expecting a million dollar ride.....

If you need to buy the arms and bushing stuff, shock and spring, along with a new seat cushion kit you can get close to $750 in parts before you know it,, then add a couple of hours shop time,,they are ornery to do,,but the ride is worth it..

Just replaced mine on my 4020 with a rebuilt one from Abilene Machine. Thought about rebuilding it until I noticed besides the cable being broken, the latch that hold the seat in position when you move it back was broken. Not cheap, but an easy fix. ($325, exchange)

I got the spring and shock absorber together aftermarket like you suggested. The arms were good...just needed the bushings and new bolts and heads. Got new seat cushions and new paint.

The 2520 is in much better shape than my 4010...I found a donor seat and rockshaft housing for it. Someone had raised the three point and something hit the back of the seat...busted one of the mounting brackets in the housing for the seat. Never could repair it successfully. I'm hoping to fix it soon.

If it was done well that would be a bargain,I usualy get into a lot of worn out bushing holes, I usto build them up with weld, but it takes a lot nof time and don't work out well...

The cable is often unhooked because the cam you spoke of is siezed to the shaft. They made the cam from aluminum and put it on a steel shaft. A good place for never-seeze. The cable and cam are not realy part of the actual suspension system. They ajust seat height.

Don't know for sure what they do, but it is tight and functions like it should. No seat cushions are included in that price, they are extra. Their number is 1-800-255-0337 for Kansas, 1-800-866-1504 for Iowa. On line at www.abilenemachine.com I have no connection with them other than being a customer.
