4020 3 pt lift adjustment

There is slightly above 2200 psi at each scv on the console 4020 with a negative stop screw adjustment. It still wont raise a 5x6 round bale up all of the way. From a previous post on this issue I learned that I need to adjust the 3 pt lift. I am following the procedure in I&T JD-203 and it says to raise the lift where the linkage connects to the hydraulic thang on the tractor and then move the lever arm on the console to the rear of its travel and adjust the length of the linkage accordingly. The problem is that the linkage is already adjusted as short as it will go and it is about 3/8" too long. What do I do about this? What about getting the appropriate die and cutting some more threads on the linkage so that it will adjust to be shorter? Any comments appreciated.

You have jumped a tooth inside the rockshaft housing. I don't have my manual handy but where the linkage enters the housing it has gear teeth and if you move the linkage one tooth it gains you the necassary adjustment distance. I am assuming that your rockshaft only goes up about 3/4 of the way in D and with no or light load goes up all the way in L and LD.

Yes that is correct '66. I dont have any idea about how to go back a tooth. I will take another look at it though. Thanks for the reply.

You can adjust the linkage as stated and that will get you full three point stroke. Your post was not clear about whether it was lifting slow or just not high enough. The system pressure at the SCV's is not the only thing you need to know for three point lift capacity. If the relief valve in the rock shaft cylinder is not adjusted to the correct pressure you would still have a weak lift.

Thanks for the reply Seller. The bale will lift quickly and smoothly just not all of the way. The quick fix was to get a 5/16 x 24 die for $3.50 from the parts house and add more threads to the rod so that it will adjust to a shorter length. I have done this and will try it on the tractor tomorrow. I hope that will solve the problem. Going into the rocker shaft housing looks to be difficult, or at least it would be for me.

If I recall right from when I was reading the sm, take the hydraulic filler cap and neck off, the right hand rockshaft cover, disconnect the cable at teh linkage(going off memory here), loosen a large nut on the outisde and reach in thru the filler hole with a long screwdriver, hold the middle gear to the left (middle of teh tractor) and slide the outer one (attatched to teh linkage) out and turn it slowly while holding the middle gear into the one not moving, then re engage the outer linkage gear, tighten and attatch it all. It was something along those lines, the book is at work so I can't confirm it this weekend. I had just found it and read it thinking "oh wow I need to do that to mine". Before I did it, the tractor went back to the dealer to get the trans pump redone and it came back adjusted right this time.

I've never tried adjusting the L/D on a JD with the I&T only JD tech manual and it covers several adjustments. IIRC after all other adjustments have been performed the last one is removing bung plug in rear end, taking a 9/16 socket(taped/welded) on an extension and turn nut inside on load mechanism until 3pt raises total height.

In all my years as an employee of a JD dealer I don't remember RS valve control teeth jumping over. I did have some technicians assemble teeth wrong.

I do know the tooth adjustment is what was done to mine before it came back, dad was talking to the guy who unloaded it off the trailer (his couson's son) and thats what he told dad you do for this problem. I had told dad a week earlier I was going to do this so he recognized the procedure when the tech was describing it. I'm not disputing your experience Jim or knowledge, just that it was done here and fixed the problem. I had no problems until it went in the first time for brakes, and trans pump. When it came back it was not right, L and LD worked fine, D would not raise all the way. Now its back to normal.

My thought is the load/depth cam follower was "not" in the right place when they set the rockshaft back on and told you that line to save face....that is exactly how they act when it's not in place...

Gentlemen:

Thank you all very much for your comments. I threaded the linkgage down to the next bend and reinstalled it. It was able to be adjusted to the correct length with the new threads. I tried it on the tractor this morning and the 4020 will now lift the roll of hay until the rocker arms are just short of verticle. If it came up any higher the top of the rocker arms would hit the tractor. Also, the lift will travel all of the way to the bottom. Thanks again for your replies. Yall are great.

I didn't dispute what you stated I just stated in all my experience hadn't witnessed the gears jumping. But I agree with Tim S in that most technicians that may make a mistake repairing something have a difficult time stating"I goofed up" and will blame on some thing else.
