Being I'm going to be pulling my starter out of my 1955 JD60 soon, I had put a post in the forums a couple of weeks ago to get some useful info. Some of you came back with VERY helpful info......and I appreciate that.

I also decided it was time to order my manual to have along my side in doing the project. The manual I ordered was the I&T shop manual that covers the 60, 70, and 80 models. To my surprise, there was NOTHING about pulling the starter whatsoever....what the hell!!!!!!! Never expected that.

I'm a motorcyclist also and when you order a shop or service manual for a bike, it gives ALL of this info. Some in a little more depth than others but they ALL have info in them right down to yanking the starter, adjusting anything & everything, and even to pulling the engine.

My question is: which manual "of the many" do I need?

Thanks ahead,
Arnie

LOL......again you guys crack me up!!!!!!!!
......but, as always, you're very helpful.

useotb- say it like it is, buddy, and from what i'm seeing so far, you're right.

teddy52food- yeh, i guess if i had a few years under my belt in working on these great putt-putts, pulling a starter WOULD be a simple task. However, I've pulled starters on quite a few cars, pickups, and even our old Ford from the farm when I was growing up....but EVERYTHING is new to me with these Deere's. My aunts and uncles had Deere's on some of their farms but I only got to enjoy the sound of the beasts once in awhile when we would run to their farm to help bring in the hay before it rained, etc. Begged my Dad to get a Deere but he kept hanging in there with the old Ford.

alabamafrog- I'm going to order your suggested manual just as soon as I hit "SUBMIT". Thanks again.

Arnie

You shouldn't need a manuel to pull a starter.

I don't know about JD 60 manuals, but the I&T manual I have for new generation tractors covers half a dozen tractors or more in 50 pages. The JD shop manual covers ONE tractor in closer to 2000 pages. The I&T manual figures you only need to know things unique to the tractor, not the common things. And sometimes it gets those wrong or at least wildly different from the official factory manual.

The parts catalog is really handy figuring out where things go when putting it back together.

I'll tell ya one thing, alabamafrog, deerely departed is right on the ball. they had my manual out the door and on its way to me the very next day..........WOW.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm getting desperate to get the 60 running again to the point I think I'm gonna sit the kerosene heater about 6ft. away from the tractor with a little fan blowing the heat my direction and finally get that starter out. Can't wait for it to warm up anymore.........LOL.

I'll be watching out for that weight. Someone else warned me of the element of surprise when gravity takes over.........lol.

Looks like this weekend will be nice enough for removal.
