I'm trying to help one of my students sell a 4020D. It is 24volt now and can"t seem to keep the lights going' My question is what would it cost to have this tractor converted to 12v.

Kits run about $600.

Check the ground wire or fuse between the batteries and the frame. Lighting depends on that wire being good.

There are two lighting systems, one running on plus 12 and one on minus 12 with respect to the chassis ground. The switching has two poles.

Lighting is also dependent on grounding of the fenders whether 12 or 24 volts.

For battery life its important that the two sides of the lighting draw the same current to keep the batteries charged and discharged evenly.

Grunge in the starter, mostly ground up brush dust is one common source of unbalance in the system.

The conversion is easy, I can get you the instructions from JD's kit. If you buy the starter, alternator and cables needed elsewhere you can do it a lot cheaper. The starter JD puts in the kit isn't to good in my opinion. Its weak for extreme cold winter starting, but there are better ones you can get that will bolt in. I did mine last year and I took my time to make sure I did it right and it took me a bout a days work. Probably would be quicker now as my heads a lot more clear than it was after the injury. I am a big fan of 12v converting 4020s.
