I've been restoring my 1961 4010D since 2003. Although I've kept track of how many coins I've dropped into this project via Quicken, I've yet to run a report for fear that it would say that I could have bought a new machine (and besides the wife would wup me silly).

I bet I've sank 15 to 20k into her. I had to replace the block as the old one was pitted, complete JD out of frame engine kit, crank turned, new valves, new cam, new lifters, new radiator, injector pump and injectors rebuilt. You name it...new in the engine practically!

Then outside of the engine, every bearing and seal has been replaced from the front to back top to bottom.

In the tranny, I had JD overhaul the synchronizers and replace the seals in the rear axle both side(you need some special tools I don't have). New clutches, new clutch springs, levers, etc. Rebuilt the steering motor, steering valve, hydraulic pump. Some new steel hydraulic lines. New brake pads, new brake discs, new lights, new tires all around, new seat, rebuilt seat suspension including shock, etc. New wiring harnesses, rebuilt starter and generator and new voltage regulator.

Oh yeah....and some pricey PPG Omni paint with epoxy primer (and yes the tractor was painfully hand sanded to the bare metal), new raised letter side decals, new decals all around, tach rebuilt and new steering wheel.

Ok...so many of you are calling me crazy. Perhaps....but I've truly enjoyed this journey. And today, that tractor runs like it rolled off the show room floor - - and perhaps even better.

That said, how much is restored will depend upon what you want and what your wallet can handle. I've been doing my machine for 6 years now and finally she is done and I'm off to a restore of my 1466 (but not quite as much).

I'll attach some before and after shots in the next few weeks.

Kenneth- I'm doing a 3020 gas for a guy right now- probably pretty close to what you've got- he had the motor done already put new tires on it ect. We have a few leaks to fix and a little work to do on the wide front and possibly some hydraulic pump work. sheet metal is nice with the worst being a rusted fender thats probably gonna have to get some new iron welded in. Looks like its going to end up around that $5,000 mark or so.

After that we will be starting on a 4010 thats getting everything from the nose to the rearend- its our personal tractor with over 20,000 hours on it. I HOPE to keep that one in the 10-15 range.
