My 50 died on me while mowing so I started with the normal stuff, check spark, check fuel, timing. Still nothing. So after dragging it into the garage I pulled the valve cover and spun the flywheel and saw no valve movement. Then I removed the access cover on top of the block and saw the cam gear was turning but the camshaft wasn't! I then drained the oil and found 2 bolt heads and part of the locking washer.I'm a rookie on these motors, they just seem so different from upright inline motors. Do I approach this from the clutch side remoing the clutch and first reduction cover to access the cam bearing? Will that enable me to remove the camthrough the bearing opening and take the gear out the top access hole for examination? I should probably look at the oil pump too. Is this common to these motors? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jack |

| I had a model A that did that. Was able to work through the top access hole and the LH side bear hole and the LH gov. housing cover hole and got the old bolts out and installed new ones with loctite and a new lock plate and never had to pull the cam. The bolts pieces are likely loose in the holes as being loose is what lead to this problem. Give it a try and if all else you can always tear more apart if needed. |

| I agree. I think it can be done just by removing the governor housing if the old bolts can be removed easily. |

| | Thanks Mike, that distributor you sold me a few years ago is holding up good though. I was hoping you would respond with your good advice! Jack |

| | Glad to hear it worked out. On my A I did not have to remove the gov. housing I think I just removed the end cover and pulled the gov. out this would at least let you grab the cam gear to move it around and align it. I might of even went through the left hand cam bearing hole and you can wiggle the cam over some and I may of ran a drill bit in the holes to drill out the bolts. A bit can catch on them and they may screw on out. |

| | I"ll keep those tips in mind when I attempt this. You mentioned a bear hole on the left side, my manuals don"t show the left side of the block in detail, is there an access hole on the left side behind the flywheel? Jack |

| Yes there should be a left hand cam bearing kinda in behind the flywheel. And I also bet I pulled the flyweel off of that A too. |
