I have a 1972 4020 with syncro transmission. The tractor looses power when climbing any kind of small hill. Also is slow to take off if rpm"s are up. Usually have to take off at idle and then I can increase rpm. I have gotton the tractor stuck a few times and the rear tires can not even get moving at high rpm in lowest gears. Again have to drop the rpm"s to idle speed and after 5 or 10 seconds the rear tires will gradually start to turn but there is little torque. Also had problems with the hydraulics not working at all when I was trying to get unstuck in reverse gear. I would have to go to forward gears to get the power steering and hydraulics for the loader to work. I want to see if anybody might know what is going on with my hydraulic system?

Could have had a clutch disk installed with ceramic pads that don't smell when slipping but do eat up flywheels. As previously asked have you checked clutch pedal free travel???????

No hydraulics involved in movement of a Syncro-range transmission.

Hot hyd line indicates a large internal leak

Have you checked free travel on clutch pedal?

As txjim said, the clutch is ruined. How long have you been using the tractor since there was any hint of a problem?

about 3 or 4 months. I have cut hay with the tractor for a while since it started. I first thought maybe the clutch but shyed away from that because I never smelled the clutch burning like I do when a clutch goes out on my truck. Also I noticed that the hydraulic line that supplies the main hydraulic pump gets very hot so I thought that I might have an internal leak or maybe a stuck pressure valve but, Im not real familar with the hydraulics on this tractor.

I agree that you need a clutch adjustment at minimum and probably a clutch job.

I know a guy named Alan Huey. Kinda funny.

There can be a hydraulic leak also, but the main problem is the clutch plate is shot or the clutch pedal has no free play. There should be about 3/4 inch of motion at the clutch pedal before there is any load of the clutch through out bearing hitting the clutch fingers.

Traction/drive clutch is slipping which in turn causes trans pump to stop/slow down pumping hyd oil.
