Hi,Have a guy that wants to sell me a good running 6 cylinder John Deere engine/power unit out of a older John Deere combine. He couldn"t find any tags or numbers and my question is as a rule do the combine power units generally fit in John Deere tractors? I would guess at the pictures of this one it would be maybe the size of a 3020 or so. Thanks for any help !!! |

| | Gunner's right, of course. I skipped the 466s, as you mentioned it was an "older" combine. Guess "older" is a relative term. How 'bout cutting out 75% of the guesswork and help us help you- what combine is this engine out of? |

| You could have a 404 or 466 that would work in many different tractors. It will work but that does not mean drop right in. It will take some things like different oil pan and possibly water pump and a few other things. There have been a few old combine engines dropped into tractors around here. Last one I heard of was a 466 from either a 66 or 7720 into a 4630. Guy loved the tractor after the change. |

| | It's a pretty long shot. Only 6 cylinder engine displacements I can think of common to combines and tractors were the 329 (4030, 2840 tractors/ 105,4400,6600, some very early 7700 combines) and the 404 (4020, 4230 tractors/ very late 105, 4400,4420,6600,7700 ombines. Leaving out the turbos, as you don't mention that. I would hope that maybe the mounting bosses would be the same (wouldn't bet on it tho), but probably the similarity would end there. Manifolds, flywheels, and other important engine accessories would likely be different. You're also in for headaches finding parts for this engine without model and serial number information which should be on a plate easy enough to find. If that's missing, forget it. |

| | What's the model of the combine? BTW, the 3020's used a 4 cylinder engine, kind of ruling out the possibility your buddy's 6 cylinder engine is the same as a 3020's! |

| well maybe a 4020 then? He bought it after it had already come out of the combine and doesn't know what model it was. |
