OK somewhere along the way I bought this 55 gallon drum of worm gear lubricant/steam cylinder oil. I broke the unopened seal on the barrel and pumped some out. This stuff is dark brown, and thick and heavy as it gets. I want to use it in the transmissions on my early JD 2 cylinder tractors---like the model D and AO. Any thoughts? I mean what harm can happen? It's not like I farm with these tractors.

I work at Case salvage yard, and we saved 2 gallons of this 600w out of a 1920s case, we use it to coat our cranks and cam bearing surfaces its gooey. Dave

The D manual actually advises against this, it even directly mentions not to use steam cylinder oil!

It's just plain too thick to work well, and I doubt it'd flow into bearings very well.

I guess it would work in the steering box of a two cylinder, but I might stick to gearlube for the transmission.

I think the other poster has a good plan to sell it to a steam gooru and buy yourself some good gear lube.

Being an optimist, I would suspect that that it was designed for a steam engine, i.e some affinity for water. The last thing I would leave in a tranny for the next 20 years. Some steam fan (WMSTR) would probably pay real money for it and you could buy some 140 wt. Thats my top of the head opinion, I have no basis in fact.
