What is model John Deere is most desirable of the Johnny Popper's letters (A,B,D,H,L)?

If you can list them in order of desirability.

Thanks

You'll have a hard time finding a tractor that doesn't have a cut hood. Deere made it very difficult to replace the muffler. First thing you did was take off the steering wheel. No Kidding. I'll bet over half I've seen have cut hoods. the other half were probably patched or replaced.

On the price, "Here" (SW WI), that's the high side of fair for an average 1940 A and a good price on a good one. I had a bear of a time selling a running 1949 A for $850 a couple years back.

Do you think this one is uncut? Sorry, wrong answer. It has a patch. A good body shop can do wonders with sheetmetal patches and bondo.

That '40 A is a desirable tractor to me. I grew up running a '40 A day in and day out. I have a very special place in my heart for those old hand crankers. If kept tuned up they always started well (except when hot) You won't regret owning a hand crank A.

Why wouldnt you just use a repair patch sold for that? just tack it in, then use a little body filler.. presto you cant tell it was fixed..many a dude has done this, much more cost efficient, then you can spend on something that is more important

If you use what they bring on auctions as a criteria my experience is G D H L And the A and B last due to the number made. Condition and options can cause some overlap.

It's a good thing we all like different models or very few would be able to afford what we like.

For me, I like the unstyled Deeres. I have an unstyled A, B and L. I also like the Dubuques, especially the 420's and 435's. As I get older I may have to start favoring the Dubuques as my shoulder gets worse.

As you can detect from the replies everyone has a favorite. Maybe that is why everyone has more than one tractor? When you have one of each you can enjoy them all.

Don't forget the GP's!

I agree, it is a personal preference type thing. Mine would be GP's, D, L series, then anything on steel.

I started to make a list but it was too difficult. It's rally a matter of personal opinion. If the collecter's looking to replace grandpa's beloved tractor, odds are he's looking for an A or B. If he's looking for uncommon machines, he'll be looking for Hi-crops and other low production machines. If he's looking to make the show circuit, he'll be looking for something easy to transport. Also. there's huge differences between tractors even year-wise. The first Unstyled B is a very different tractor vs. the last Cyclone B.

For "me" - H G D R B A L M GP

Blonde, Brunette, Redhead... beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Maybe if you have a certain use in mind (for the tractor, that is!), some of the more experienced folks on this site can help.

I am thinking of buying a 1940 JD A hand start. Just wondering if it is one that is desirable. I prefer the B, but I don't know much about the A. I'm looking at possible restoration. Price is 1250 now and it is in decent shape and running.

Desirability depends on what one likes, but the 1940 A was kinda different: It kept the four speed transmission but got the 321 ci engine. 1941 A"s went to the six speed, 1939"s had the four speed, but the smaller unstyled type engine.

For me, The late styled A 1947-1952 is my choice, but it's all in what you prefer and what you want to do with the tractor.
