4020 Engine Rebuild Kit

I am about to tear apart my 71' 4020 to do an out of frame engine rebuild. What is the best rebuild kit to buy and where should I get it? I heard that the kits that JD sells are not as good as some of the others that are available. Also, is it necessary for me to have the injection pump rebuilt at this time? I don't want there to be a problem with the new gear meshing with the old pump if that is possible?

Where'd yo hear THAT one???

If the injection pump is good you can leave it alone. Are you doing an inframe or out of frame. The gears you are reffering to is the gear on the oil pump and the gear made onto the camshaft, if there are alot of hours and you are going to pull the cam, you should replace it and look at gear on oil pump. Reliance makes john deere rebuild kits and so does federal mogul (fp diesel). There are many others as well, I think those are the top couple, they advertise them on this site as well as many others. Just depends on how much you want to replace and how good of a job you want to do.

I have done alot of 4020 rebuilds, have used various kits as per costumer choice. If it were mine I would ONLY use a Deere kit. To often the less priced "others" kits cost more in the long run.

I'm with Larry. JD parts are still your best for the money. If you're not in a hurry for the engine kit, then wait for season specials.

Will I need to buy those gears separate or should they come with the out of frame kit that JD sells. I want to do this thing right. I have already spent much more than I will ever get out of the tractor already so why stop now. Is there anything else you would recommend I do while I have everything apart. I have already replaced the injectors, water pump and radiator as far as engine related stuff is concerened.

Do a search for Endurance power products, my cousin has a 3010, 4430, and 2 4630's with their kits. If anyone can break/destroy something it's him!! My brother and myself overhauled his tractors. All the shops around here use them and the kits use some parts that come in the jd packages. Plan on replacing the cam shaft and oil pump drive shaft and that will take care of your inj. pump question.

John Deere has the pistons installed in the liners so you dont have to worry about bending the rings when you install them. Have the rods resized as well. The oil pump gear comes with the cam or at least it used to. Dont run the old oil pump gear against the new cam. good luck.
