4020 PTO brake

I have a 1965 4020 with a synchro shift transmission. The PTO seems to work just fine. I noticed today when I pull the PTO lever out that it would almost fall back into the brake position from neutral I know in the past that it would take a little bit of effort to pull it back into brake and it did work. Now in brake position it still takes a little effort to turn the PTO but it’s not locked down. Is there an adjustment for the brake? I have an owner’s manual and an IT manual and there is nothing in it about adjusting the PTO brake. Is this a one step adjustment when the PTO is adjusted?

There is a detent inside that needs freed up. Its on the right side behind the kick plate.

Mark, from my recollection, there is no adjustment on the pto brake on an early model. There is a detent that keeps the lever from coming back too far and engaging the brake when you disengage the pto clutch untill the pto slows down. What usually happens to the pto brake is the facing wears off or the pin that keeps the pto brake from turning breaks. The pto brake is accessed by splitting the transmission case from the clutch housing. On the early model the linkage for the pto clutch and brake is all mechanical. On a late model the pto clutch and brake is hydraulicly operated by a valve which is mechanicaly operated. The brake can be affected by misadjustment of the linkage that controls the valve. It too has a facing on it that can wear off and a locating pin that can break, but it also has a o-ring that seals the piston to the clutch housing. The powershift is somewhat different yet, but since yours is a synchro, we won't go into that. Good luck.

Thanks for your help, can the PTO brake be seen from the excess plate below to see if it's worn out or the pin is broken? Another thing off subject while I was under the tractor looking in the excess hole I noticed a big button head shaft? between the PTO throw out fork and the trans looking like the shaft end goes into the trans housing, what is this?

Thanks Again
Mark

That 'button head' shaft is what pushes on the PTO brake, to see the brake you will need to split it between the clutch houseing and the trans. houseing.
