4020 Diesel Fuel Pumps weak ?

Can the fuel pumps on 4020 Diesels get weak? It is not leaking into the engine or outside. I have been having to manually prime the engine to get it started.

Thanks,

Do you mean the lift pump?

I recently went through that on my 4020.

If the fuel level in the tank was above the injection pump it would always start.

As the fuel got lower, it would lose prime if it sat a couple of days.

Is that how your's acts... fuel level makes a difference?

Anyhow, replacing the lift pump on mine made it start better than it has in YEARS.

Also, with lower fuel levels ANY little leak in the primary fuel system will allow air in when sitting unused... a loose fitting, or a tiny hole worn or rusted in a steel fuel line.

Yes, the linkage that rides on the engine camshaft wears out. When the happens, the hand primer lever works fine, but the engine driven part of pump barely works.

It starts hard when it sits for a while, or when it is hot. I get one good pump on the primer, and then it seems to move freely after that. The engine starts much better after priming.
